how do i know if my 9 month old cat is in heat she is acting strange writhing around on her back legs and making a funy noise she is an indoor cat

Sounds like she is... not spayed, 9 months old, writhing around. That is the most obvious explanation.

Yeah, it sounds like she's in heat. Please take her to a vet as soon as you can. She's NOT happy going through this, and until you get her spayed she will continue to go through this again and again.

Not to mention, it is not only a benefit in that she won't contribute to the pet over population, she will be healthier. You won't have to worry about ovarian cancer or cancer of the mammary glands. Her chances of getting those two diseases are cut drastically!
