olive3322 February 3rd, 2008, 09:10 PM Hello, I have a 7 year old poddle terrior mix. A couple of days ago she was coughing alot. Which is out of the ordinary for her. A bone in her throat crossed my mind but she hasn't had any for a very long time. I called a vet the next day and he said with the cold weather, the air is likely dry and the rings in her broncial tubes may be collapsed alittle. So he said the put on the humidifier and get some moisture in the air. I have done that and that has seemed to help. She hasn't really coughed the last day or two. But now today, she seems not to close her mouth. When she is sitting there her mouth is always open. If she is laying down with her head on the floor or couch or whatever, then she closes it, but if she is holding her head up, her mouth stays open. I found this pretty weird. And when she licks her lips her tongue seems to have alittle bit of foam or bubbles on it. She hasn't really been acting any different. She still seems to be eating and drinking and playing around. Anyone with any ideas? Could this just be a "cold and sore throat"? Thanks in advance for replies...
hazelrunpack February 3rd, 2008, 09:19 PM She may have contracted kennel cough. Was she in a group dog situation recently? There are a number of varieties of KC and only the few most common are taken care of by the vaccine. They can cause coughing that lasts a few days.
But the open mouth and bubbles on the tongue are puzzling. If she were mine, I'd make an appointment and have her looked at, just to make sure she doesn't have anything lodged in her throat. Was she pawing at her mouth at all? Have you checked the roof of her mouth to make sure she doesn't have a stick or something odd jammed in behind her teeth?
the gang February 3rd, 2008, 09:22 PM it could be very well a cold and she is having a hard time breathing, but if it was me i would bring her in good luck let us know on how she is doing brenda and the pins.
olive3322 February 3rd, 2008, 11:15 PM Thanks for the replies. She hasn't been around other dogs at all, she is always in the house unless she's out to pee. Her breathing seems to be the same as usual. I will see how the nite and tomorrow goes. Will make an appointment if she isn't any better. Thanks guys...
olive3322 February 4th, 2008, 08:25 AM So now I am thinking that she might have a sore in her mouth or on the roof of her mouth. When I give her a treat, I throw it on the ground and she has been having trouble picking up the treats. Which she usually picks up with no problem. And regarding the white foam or bubbles, I changed her water today and there was alot of the foam or bubbles on the water. Maybe she has a mouth infection or something? But not sure why she would have been coughing and last nite she sneezed about 20 times. I don't know, will likely take her to the vet.
badger February 4th, 2008, 09:34 AM When you think about it, anything in the mouth or throat is naturally going to interfere with breathing and swallowing. She may also be coughing on excess saliva; as far as I know, dogs can't spit :dog:.
One of my cats recently had dental surgery for a rotten tooth, and only because I noticed he couldn't pick up his kibble.
So I think the vet should see her, definitely.
hazelrunpack February 4th, 2008, 09:41 AM That does sound like a good idea, olive. Just a thought, does she seem to be having trouble opening her mouth to yawn?
olive3322 February 4th, 2008, 10:49 PM Well, took Olive to the vet today. Didn't get me anywhere. He is baffled as to what her problem is. Gave me some antibiotics but wasn't confident that is would do anything. There goes 75 bucks for nothing. He had no good reason for her mouth being open, or for her previous coughing. Will have to wait it out and see i guess. I will just keep an eye on her eating and drinking.
badger February 4th, 2008, 11:22 PM Are you using something new in your house, something you spray like air freshener, or a new cleaning product? Maybe it's something in his environment, something you'd never think of as being a problem.
olive3322 February 5th, 2008, 08:29 AM Nope nothing has changed at all. She isn't coughing anymore now, I think the humidifier helped that. It is the open mouth that I am concerned about. The vet has no idea. I will keep an eye on her for a couple more days and if nothing changes I will take her to a larger center and to a different vet.

Love4himies February 5th, 2008, 09:49 AM I don't know anything about coughing in dogs, but here is a link that I go to, to find out about issues with my cat. It is actually written for Vets so I have to read a couple of times to get the gist of what they are saying:
