liver damage

Hi everyone, I am new here. I have a 7 month old mini Daschund (Sophie) that was poisoned by a Sago palm a month ago. Blood work done today was stable. Levels are still low but they hadn't dropped from the last blood work last week. She is on a low protein diet of Hills L/D food (which she really doesn't like), and we are giving her SAM E, ursidiol, Vitamin E, Milk Thistle, and Vitamin C to help the liver regenerate and a diuretic for fluid retention. If anyone has any advise or has had any experience with their animal recovering from toxins I would appreciate it. We spent a week in Gainesville Florida at the hospital and now our Vet is monitoring her. Thank you.

Hi, doxies2.

I'm afraid I have no advice for you, but it sounds like she's in good hands. I did want to say welcome to the board--and doing so will bump your thread back up to the top of the posts and perhaps attract someone with some experience!

Good luck and quick recovery for Sophie. :goodvibes:

I am very sorry that I can't offer you any advice on this particular problem - any other Dachshund problems, I am an expert (unfortunately). But I would continue with the food as prescribed and the other meds etc. that you are giving your pup until the specialist and your primary vet tell you otherwise. Your put is still maturing and you need to get this health aspect under control just in case you have to deal with other Dachshund health issues. One of my Dachshunds had to eat the Hill's canned c/d for 6months and hated it - but "forced" himself - they do love their food. A couple of years ago I did speak with a woman whose dog was the only one of 12 dogs in a group who had survived lepto and he had to be on a very low protein diet as well - in his case for life. Please update on how she is doing. Dachshunds will pretty much eat anything - and putting it in the cupboard doesn't stop them - just push over a chair and swing up to the counter and open the cupboard. My guys were determined - even after back surgery. Fortunately I am a plant killer myself - just looking at them makes them wilt - and I also have bad ragweed, so zip in plants in the house and the very basics outside since I kill them too. I was afraid a couple of years ago though when my husband bought an Oleander tree to replace the latest casualty in the front yard. Oleanders are very poisonous - also to people - and absolutely a really stupid plant to buy when you live in ice cold Toronto.

Sago is dangerous for dogs? Good to know.
It's strange in a way, how many things are dangerous to one species and not another ...

:sorry: about your little one's problems. Sending some :goodvibes: your way!

Hi Doxies2:

I have a 3 yr old shih tzu that suffered from toxicity this past July and it was from Metrondiazole which he rec'd for diarrhea with blood due to IBD. After his liver enzymes being as high as 758 and low as 265 he has settled in at about 363 with a new test upcoming. Anyway, the vet has put him on Milk Thistle which helps the liver and actually has enticed Andy to eat. He's not very "food motivated" and dog food to him isn't his choice. WE have been feeding him baked/boiled chicken along with Royal Canin Hypoallergenci. Vet wanted to try him on SD Z/D but he won't eat it.

Allie is 2 1/2 and has SIBO and has been eating Euk Low Residue, then the Royal Hypo and now on SD Z/D but then she will eat anything.

So, try the milk thistle for sure.

Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts. Oh and Sago palms are poisonous to both people and animals. Anyone with pets and/or children should get rid of them. When we found out that they were poisonous my husband came home and dug ours up and got rid of it. The only problem is that the berries can still be in the yard so we follow her around the yard. I think we're going have the grass removed and re-sod the yard for safety. Sophie is acting happy and energetic (though she does take a lot of naps, but then doxies to that anyway), and she is very skinny (she lost a LOT of weight) She doesn't like the Hills L/D food at all, we are trying the dry and the canned. I add a little plain yogurt (a teaspoon) and that helps a little bit. She tries to get to our other daschunds food (she loves that food). I've been looking for some low protein foods that maybe we could add to the food to make it tastier, I've found some possibilties but want to talk to our vet first before trying them. If we figure it out I'll post them so that maybe it could help someone else too. And again if you hear of any suggestions for low protein food or snacks please let me know. Thank you.
