I have a 9-month old chi who just hit 3 lbs. I've been waiting for her to get a little bigger before having her spayed, but I think this is as big as she's going to get (her mom only weights 4 lbs) - I have always had my dogs fixed, and would never even consider letting them have puppies,(because I could never sell them and I'd end up with 101 chihuahuas) but her size really worries me!!! There are no male dogs here and she's not allowed outside by herself, so I'm not so concerned about that, but I know there are so many problems (infections, cancers) that can come from not spaying your dog. Anybody have any thoughts on getting a dog this small spayed? Thanks

My pup was just around 3 - 4 pounds when he was neutered (he was tinier than my mom's chi!), I don't think it's a problem. Most shelters will spay/neuter small puppies and tiny little kitties to ensure they are fixed before being adopted, and they weigh even less than your chi! I did ask my vet about whether or not we had to wait until our pup was a bit bigger, but he was not concerned as he had operated on much smaller pups than mine.

Your puppy is not too small. My two sister cats I got from a rescue group when they were just under 8 weeks old. They had been spayed at 6 weeks old, so they weighed a whole lot less than 3 lbs. Too young in my opinion to have been spayed, but it had been done.

she's not too small, the vet will use smaller instruments :)
