Pepper was staggering today so I bit the bullet and took him to the vet. His kidneys are failing. They told us to make him comfortable and it may be awhile or it may not be long. He's eating and drinking and using his litter box. His heart is also not too good but it's mainly his kidneys. We are all upset and will be spending quality time with him. He's well over 17 years old. Surprisingly,my husband is really upset. He found Pepper at the ball field when he was a very young cat and brought him home. He's always been "The Baseball Cat".
We are going to miss him so. He will be getting tons of love You can see our precious boy below.

Why do they live such short lives. They should live as long as we do, so that we don't have to miss them so much.

I'm so sorry. Be brave, he will need this from you.:grouphug:

We are all in tears but he's doing well tonight. He ate and drank and used his litter box. If he jumps down from somewhere,he staggers really badly but he won't let us help him. He's always been so independent. He has always been so healthy, this was really a shock. He is so sweet and we will miss him so much.

I'm so sorry. Make him comfortable and love him as much as you can, so that when he leaves the world, he will leave it knowing how much he was loved.

He's never been one to let us hold him much. He prefers to sit beside me and let me pet him or he snuggles up to me. I petted his sides and I could tell he was uncomfortable with that. But,he's extremely loving.....on his terms. I look at him and think how I can't believe he is going away. We've had him so long. I've lost 2 other cats and a dog I got AFTER I got him. He's been so steady, almost never sick. This will take a lot of getting used to.
He's just such a sweetheart. Tt's hard to believe time has gone by so fast.

17 years is a long time. You are lucky to have had him this long.

I'm sorry to hear Pepper has kidney failure  It is great that Pepper is still eating, drinking & using the litter box :thumbs up because of these good signs there still may be things you can do to help Pepper feel a bit better :)

What does Peppers' blood results look like? Has your vet discussed giving fluids either subQ or IV? Has your vet mentioned Phosphate Binders (to help remove phosphorus from her system)?

My :cat: Duffy has early stage kidney failure here is her thread: http://www.pets.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=45017 hopefully you will find some of the info given to me & that I have found & posted useful to help Pepper

There are alot of websites with info on CRF the ones I have found most helpful incl:

His creatine levels were very high but his thyroid was ok. He has SubQ fluids yesterday and will be going in for more as needed. He's doing ok and has been put on a food,NatureK, to help keep fluids within his system. We know he could go tomorrow or he could live for a longer time. We will just cherish everyday with him.

Have you thought about giving him SubQ fluids yourself, at home? It's really not that hard, after a bit of practice, and would be cheaper and less stressful for your cat than going to the vet so often (unless he doesn't have a problem with it). Your vet can show you how, and there is also this excellent website for lots of detailed info on the process: http://www.weirdstuffwemake.com/weird/stuff/pets/cats/sophia/catjuice.html

I am so sorry for what you are facing. It is so hard to say goodbye, but at least you have some warning and you have time to make your peace. :grouphug::grouphug:

I second that, subq fluids are easy to administer at home. If you think you might be able to do it ask the vet or the techs to show you how and I would be happy to help you as well.
