cat with bleeding gums/mouth

Hi, can anybody help? My mother's cat is at the veterinarian's now but he cannot diagnose it. The cat has bleeding gums and the roof of his mouth is bleeding. She took him in as a kitten off the city streets and he is about 7 months old now. This problem began a couple of days ago and he is actually losing a lot of blood. The vet said in 17 years of practice and in veterinary school he has never seen anything like it. He gave the cat vitamin k, prednisone, penicillin, iv fluids and something else but is unsure if he will survive the night. His symptoms do not fit those of poisoning. Please help!! Has anybody ever seen anything like this before?

Wow, that sounds brutal. Are you sure it isn't some kind of poisoning? Lots of  that he pulls through this. Let us know how he does.

I have never heard of this either, has the kitten been checked for a growth that is bleeding?
