Cat treats

Hi After reading these threads, I have sucessfully changed Maggies diet to Wellness brand food. Because we did not know better, we had been feeding her grocery store brands. In Lethbridge, where we go to shop there is only one store that carries Wellness. They did not carry treats of any kind so we are continuing to give her Temptations. She is crazy for them like the commercials. Do you have any opinions on these (she eats lots) or recommendations for something better for her. She is trying to open the drawer where we keep them as I speak. She is not eating them instead of her food. Thanks, Laurie and Maggie

Maggieandme! maybe you could find a brand of really good kibble and by a small bag using those as treats! I have done that before.

Good Luck

Cindy

Hi Cindy We are feeding her a diet of both wet and dry Wellness as perscribed here. Unfortunately she can tell the difference between the kibble and the treats. We have tried to trick her. I think she is smarter than we are. Laurie

The occasional Temptation isn't a big deal, but if you want to balance them out with some healthier treats you might want to hunt down some freeze-dried all meat treats like Halo Liv-a-Littles, Real Food Toppers, or Benny Bully's. I know that the Tailblazers here in Calgary carries all that stuff so if the one in Lethbridge: http://www.tailblazerspets.com/tailblazers_lethbridge.html doesn't, I'm sure they could order them for you.

Other options you can do yourself is to freeze some bite sized pieces of raw or lightly boiled chicken or turkey. A teaspoon of plain unsweetened yogurt is also a big hit in my household.

Thanks so much for your suggestions, Sugarcatmom. I wanted to tell you we live in a village 50 miles north of Lethbridge. We pass thru Milk River regularly on our way to Great Falls. Life in Calgary must be a big change for you. We lived in Calgary for many years. Our friends thought we were nuts at the time of our move. They are very envious now. We live on one acre at the edge of town. Laurie

Hey, my cats are crazy for Temptations also...
Sandy literally picks up the bag of treats and brings them to hubby several times a day to get treats! Funny. The others hear the bag and come running. (great way to find them when you want to)
but are they bad for the kitties?

They're not great, but like people indulging in some junk food now and then, a few here and there won't hurt. I personally don't feed them based on the rather unsavoury ingredients (including BHA/BHT as a preservative) and because my cat actually prefers freeze-dried chicken, but as long as you don't overdo it, I wouldn't worry about it.

Top 10 Ingredients:

Hearty Beef Flavor
Chicken By-Product Meal, Ground Corn, Animal Fat (Preserved with BHA/BHT), Rice, Soybean Meal, Dried Meat By-Products, Wheat Flour, Natural Poultry Flavor, Calcium Carbonate, Malted Barley.

Savory Salmon Flavor
Chicken by-product meal, ground corn, animal fat (preserved with BHA/BHT), rice, soybean meal, dried meat by-products, wheat flour, natural poultry flavor, salt, salmon meal, calcium carbonate.

Seafood Medley Flavor
Chicken By-Product Meal, Ground Corn, Animal Fat (preserved with BHA/BHT), Rice, Dried Meat by-Products, Wheat Flour, Natural Poultry Flavour, Corn Gluten, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride.

Tantalizing Turkey Flavor
Chicken By-product Meal, Ground Corn, Animal Fat (preserved with BHA/BHT), Rice, Dried Meat By-products, Wheat Flour, Natural Poultry Flavor, Corn Gluten, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride.

Tasty Chicken Flavor
Chicken by-product meal, ground corn, animal fat (preserved with BHA/BHT), rice, soybean meal, dried meat by-products, wheat flour, natural poultry flavor, calcium carbonate, salt.

Sugarcatmom, thanks for the suggestion of freezing bite size pieces of chicken. For some reason I never thought of that. :o My cats also only want the "junk-food" treats. I did however get them off the Temptations and onto Luvs....at least they aren't preserved with BHA/BHT.

My cats' fav treat is Temptations. They don't get them often (a couple every couple of weeks or so) so I don't worry about the ingredients.
