has anyone adopted a dog that has been spoken too in another language. how did you deal with this barrier, how did the dog react and how did things work out.i'm looking a two that have been spoken too mostly in french.....guess i should get one of those conversion dictionaries if the time comes:D

well hopefully they know the hand signals or you best start up reading that French dictionary :D

I think the switch should happen fairly easily. The French command words aren't that hard, you can use those and then use the English word right after.

My friend adopted a dog that could only understand Italian. Not a problem - she just learned the basic words needed for Sit, Stay etc. and then started to say the words in Italian and then in English - dog picked up very quickly - and of course the cookie helped. Personally, I think the dog knew commands anyway, just as trained dogs do - when to Sit, Stay, Down etc. - but why admit to this when there was a cookie to be had?

I did , Sam is english. I almost never talk to him in english. He seemed to understand what I want from him (usually when I have a cookie in my hand :D ) I know lots of english people adopted french fosters and never had any problem.

I think it depends on the animal and it takes abit of time for the animal to learn the language as well.

My neighbours adopted one of Frenchy's foster Buzz. Before he was adopted he was in a French family and was adopted to an English family.

Poor Buzz, still has no idea what his new Mommy says to him and everyone else gave up speaking to him in English and speaks to him in French only.

I love it when Buzz's Mommy gets frusterated with him and speaks to him in French with her thick Scottish accent! JE DIT NOOOOOOOOOOO BUZZ!!!

Her accent is really nice, I love it when she says "I don't know" It sounds like I don't nooooooow. She makes the o sound really long.

No wonder why Buzz doesn't stand English yet! He's doesn't understand her accent!

Wayne I'm sure you will have no problem with the language change. Don't worry you don't have to use big long complicated expressions about dogs and couches if you don't want to. :D

Both my previous dog and my current dog (Toby) came from french families originally and both had noooo trouble at all learning the english commands. We did use the french at first and then both for awhile, and they really caught on fast.

Now we speak to Toby pretty much all the time in English. Once in awhile we'll try an 'assis' and he still remembers what to do. Hand signals are also good to help reinforce commands. You could try saying 'assis' and doing the hand signal at the same time...then later you can substitute 'sit' and continue with the hand signal and they usually get it pretty quick.

And they'll try to convince you that cookies are necessary for the transition. Remember: begging for treats is universal dog language!
