My neighbors should not have pets!!

So...the neighbors behind me moved in about 7 years ago, they had a dog at that time (border collie mix). The first day they moved in we saw the dog, tied with a 4 foot leash to their shed. All day. We thought, well maybe they moved from somewhere with a fenced yard and so they did not have a good tie-out yet. So we gave them one, a 20 foot cable tie-out, saying we didn't need it anymore because we had our yard fenced. They used it once and then proceeded to go back to using the 4 foot leash, for the next 6 years. They would leave the dog tied out all day while they were in the house or sat on their deck. Even when they were on the deck, they would tie the dog up far enough away so that he couldn't reach them. The poor dog would bark frantically non-stop for hours and the people acted like they couldn't even hear them! (This dog inspired me to write and pass the town's first anti-tethering ordinance. unfortunately the dog died soon after it was passed so it never helped him. )

One night at 1 in the morning, my mother heard the dog screaming and screaming. It went on for about 15 minutes, until she got up and went outside. She looked in their yard-no dog. She followed the screaming until she found him several houses down, he had broken his leash and tried to crawl under a truck and his leash got stuck on the underneath of the truck and he couldn't move. So my mom untangled him and tried to walk him back to our house to drive him to the shelter. Only when the dog saw his house, he stopped walking and tried to slip out of his collar (they never ever walked the dog off of their property, so he was terrified). So my mom walked up to the neighbors' door and knocked. They were awake, and she said "your dog was screaming for 15 minutes so I went and found him and he was stuck under someone's truck and couldn't move." the neighbors just said "Oh." and took the dog inside. While my mother was standing there, she saw the dog's food dish, filled with spaghetti and hotdogs that looked like they had been sitting in the dish for quite awhile. :yuck:

Last year the neighbors called my shelter, asking if it was legal to bury their dog in their yard. We asked what had happened to the dog, and the woman said "I don't know, it was weird, his stomach got all big and hard and he didn't poop for 5 days and then he just died." Obviously they hadn't even taken him to a vet!! :yell:

Now a year or so before the dog died, they got a kitten from a friend. He climbed the fence into our yard once, and we called the neighbors and told them, "If your cat comes into the yard when the dogs are out there, he's gonna get killed." They said "Oh no he is an indoor cat." he was out every single day! He was picked up and brought to the shelter twice, unfortunately they claimed him both times. Today he was found hit by a car and brought to the shelter. He is very badly injured and will probably have to be euthanised. The neighbors aren't home (or just aren't answering the phone) so we had to take him to the nearest vet.

I hope hope HOPE that they won't run out and get another pet after this. But it wouldn't surprise me if they did. They don't even seem to care about their pets, they weren't even sad when their dog died! The best part is, the husband is a minister and they run a church...shouldn't that make them compassionate?? I just can't stand them and I hope they move out!!!

Nice, a minister no less. Send him a picture of the patron saint of animals.

All you can do is hope they don't get any more pets.

I hope they don't get any more pets either and I hope the vet is sending them the bill.

How awful! It sickens me that animal cruelty laws will not handle cases like this. Obviously these people need to be charged with neglect and be forbidden to own another animal.

That's so sad. It bothers me that people who obviously don't care for animals, continue to get them! If they don't enjoy their pet's company, what's the point in having it in the first place.

Later today owner called the shelter, sounding upset (guess they cared more about the cat than they did about their dog!) The wife said "He was gonna be an inside cat! But then my son (who is 19 I believe) said cats belong outside and then one day he got out and killed a bird and my son said "see he needs to be outside to hunt", so I let him out after that." Yup. These people also screamed at my dad one day because, back when they had their dog, we sent animal control out to talk to them, and they knew it must have been my family who called. We had taken pictures of where they tied the dog up, because they always tied him on a short lead in one spot, and it turned into a mud pit. We eventually figured out that they always put him in that spot because they did not want dog poop all over their yard. They also "bathed" the dog once by hosing him down, without any soap, and without drying him off. Unfortunately nothing they've done is really prosecutable, even though they definitely are not good pet owners.

I don't think sending them anything would help. We've tried to talk to them over the years, they just ignored what we said. I just keep wishing they will move away and a nice animal-loving family will move in!

I wish both the dog and kitty had known a better life before they died. :rip: :candle:

I would be sending all your paperwork to the church ladies. That would stir up a pile of poop for him there..

I like the headline 'Local Minister Cruel to Animals', or 'Man of God, Mean to His Creations'....

I like those also...but I wouldn't like being sued for slander. :o

Of course this isn't the only case like this I have seen, it's just the fact that their yard borders ours and I see them every day that makes it worse for me. But trust me, if there was anything more I could have done for those animals, I would. Unfortunately they never broke any laws...they didn't beat the animals, they took them inside at night, they fed them, they got them rabies shots and licensed the dog after we sent them an unlicensed citation...too bad there are no laws that say you have to love your animals!

I feel for you I really do, we had to move because our last place was so frustrating for me. The appauling situations for the pets and kids alike were just too much for me. And seeing the authorities, HS and FACS, come so often and nothing ever get done or change was just too much for me on a daily basis. I just wish that some days I could've beat some sense into those kinds of people, but it would do no good. Those that are teachable do learn, those that arent just frustrate the heck out of those of us that really care. :wall:

Sometimes it does help to imagine that you could exact revenge or justice on them!!!

 They do all answer for it at the end of their days...

I was a mail carrier for 30 years till I retired last year. One of the reasons I was so glad to finally get to retire is to get away from seeing some of the absolute horrors some people put their dogs through. I called animal control in several instances, but some of these people weren't doing anything illegal, just unbelievably stupid and inhumane. :frustrated:
Sometimes I fantasize that God will punish them someday by inflicting the same treatment on them that they inflicted on their poor dogs. If I had a place to care for them, I'd probably start an animal rescue, but then my husband would divorce me! :)
