Hi, I have a year and a half old female spayed Beagle. She was always a little tough to housetrain but at 8 months she finally came along...however she is constantly doing number 2 in the house. We feed her and let her out, I am out with her and watch her do it and then she comes in the house and within an hour she has done it again on the floor.

I took her to the vet and there are no problems, she is fed a good diet, lots of exercise, rarely left on her own, has a big backyard that is cleaned each and every time she goes so there isn't a mess out there. I just don't know what to do with her. I was hoping by a year and a half we would be able to let her roam the house and do some independant play but it's back to when she was little and we had to have her beside us the whole time. That doesn't even help, she has pooped right in front of me lots of times.

We tried screaming NO when we saw her doing it and taking her outside to her poo place, we cleaned it up only when she was away from our sight becuase they sometimes get a thrill watching us clean I was told by the vet, I used a special deoderizer to get rid of the smell, We tried smacking her bum once when we caught her hoping that maybe that was the thing that would stop the behaviour but no (I know you are not going to like that one but two vets have told me if its a last resort to try one smack on the hind quarters and if that doesn't work then don't try it again).

Please I have done all that I can do with good foods (which is a very high vet quality food that I put her on because I thought maybe she was having a problem with store brands), and vet visits...I NEED SOME TRAINING TIPS IF YOU HAVE THEM...I am desperate...I can't keep her if she is pooping on the floor and I will be having a baby crawling around them soon...

I don't know how you trained your dog originally, but you will have to start over as though she were an 10 week old puppy. You cannot allow her freedom in the house until she is reliable.

Preventing mistakes is much easier than trying to correct them. As you see, screaming and smacking just dont' work.

Do you free feed her, or give her regular meals? When you say you watch her when she goes out - do you mean you go out with her, and keep her on leash until she goes? This is necessary to praise and reinforce her going outside.

Here are bunch of articles on housetraining adult dogs. You will have to be very consistant and NOT allow her freedom of the house until she is reliable and housebroken, which is not now.

Hope these help - they should!:)

You need to restrict her freedom. Put her in her kennel when you aren't around to watch her. If you see her going to go, then say quietly and firmly "no no no no no" and take her outside, and let her finnish it there. Give her treats after she does it, as this will help her learn quicker.

When you take her outside, watch her to see if she goes number 2. If she does, give her treats and bring her inside for a little freedom. If she doesn't, then take her inside and put her in her crate. In about ten minutes take her back outside to see if she needs to go number 2. If she does and goes outside, then give her treats. If she still doesn't, then put her back in her crate and leave her there for another ten minutes before taking her out and repeating everything. If she still doesn't, then you can figure that she doesn't need to.
Sorry if that was a little hard to follow.

Just let her out every little while. Prevention, not correction.
