Cat Urinating on dog bed

Help, I have a 1 year old neutered male Siamese mix cat. He has always been very good about using his litter box. About a week ago he decided to add my dog's bed to his bathroom stops. He urinates on it about once a week. Nothing new has been added into the household. The dog bed is a plastic baby mattress (My dog is a Great Dane) I purchased some Over the counter Odor Out from Wal Mart and sprayed the carpet and bed, but Ivan keeps returning. Ivan still uses his litter box, it just seems he has added this new place to his list. I do not want to get rid of my cat, but cat urine odor is very offensive! I just cannot understand why he just started this behavior. Can anyone help!

Anytime a cat starts urinating outside the box, a medical issue should probably be ruled out first with a full blood panel and urine culture. If everything checks out in that department, you might have to re-evaluate things like the litter box location, type of litter, number of litter boxes, and if there is any stress in the house. Read this website for lots of tips on litter box issues: http://www.catinfo.org/litterbox.htm

I plan to call vet tomorrow and try and get an appt. Ivan seems to be using his litterbox and the "clump" seems normal sized. In other words he is urinating a regular amount annd in his litter box....as well as the dog's bed. Any ideas for removing the scent so he would not return?

My male cat did this a few years ago! After a quick visit to the vet it was determined to be a Urinary Infection....But the vet told me then that it is always a sure sign that something is wrong when a cat goes outside their litterbox!

Keep us posted!

You can try an enzymatic cleaner along the lines of Nature's Miracle (http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444177 5473&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302033465), or I've heard great things about Anti-Icky-Poo (http://www.antiickypoo.com/).

Good luck with the vet visit, and let us know what the results are.

Once your cat was found to have a urinary tract infection, did he quit going in the inappropriate place? I hope it is medical and not behavioral. What has me worried is that Ivan does go in his litterbox sometimes.
