new wheezing in my cat

Hi
Wondering if anyone has experienced this before. I have a domestic shorthair, turning two next month. We were given him at 3 months of age by our good friends that had him prior to that. He is fully immunized and healthy prior to the last 2 weeks. He doesn't seem to have any other symptoms except these intense wheezing episodes, almost sounds like he will vomit but doesn't vomit at all. They last about 2 minutes and then he has more shallow rapid breathing following it. He had a worse one during the night last night. We have had unusually warm temperatures but he has the option of a cooler section of house and isn't choosing it so I don't think it's just the heat (didn't do it last year during the heat). I have a call into the vet to get him in but am wondering if anyone has any suggestions in the meanwhile. He seems okay between episodes, perhaps a bit less energetic overall but still going outside, eating, drinking. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Boy, that sounds an awful lot like he's having asthma attacks. A vet appointment is definitely needed and I hope you can bring him in sooner rather than later (asthma can be deadly). In the meantime, you might want read these websites for some info on asthma:

If it does turn out to be asthma, please ask your vet about inhaled meds (using a spacer called an AeroKat (http://www.aerokat.com/)). More and more vets are realizing the benefits of inhalers as opposed to just steroid shots and pills (fewer side-effects, for one).

Good luck, and let us know how it turns out!
