i have a 4yr old yellow lab. she's on steroids for an eye infection so she's been getting into a lot of foods in cupboards. today she ate a whole bag of confectioners sugar. she threw up a good bit, but is moaning. could she be seriously ill?

If your dog is moaning then she is probably in pain and you should call the vet. If it's after hours where you live then call the emergency vet !!!!

I'm not trying to scare you but dogs do not exhibit symptoms of pain unless it's pretty severe. That's part of their survival instinct. I think you need to call a vet tonight and please come back and let us know what happens.

Poor thing. I hope she's ok. :fingerscr :grouphug:

she actually has an appointment tomorrow.. i haven't heard her whimpering anymore. do you think she'll be alright to wait until tomorrow? she's drinking water and seems okay, but she is a tough cookie.

IM not sure how well a dog can digest sugars...also I am not positive what it is in chocolate that is so deadly to dogs but just the fact that chocolate contains sugar and is as dangerous as it is... I would be calling the E vet ASAP and asking them what they think.
Honestly, I would rather spend the E Vet fee and still have a dog come morning then gamble with their lives.

you should be able to call your vet and ask them. most areas have a 24 hour emergency vet that will take calls. you may have to look a few towns over but if its just a phone call at this point, it wont hurt to call if you are reluctant to go tonight. :)

I answered in your other thread that I think you should go to an emergency vet asap. Good luck and keep us posted. :fingerscr :goodvibes:

I know this is a bit of an old thread, but for anyone just reading this now and living in Canada, a friend of mine gave me an invaluable number for situations such as this....

SPCA Poison hotline
1-800-548-2423

There is a small fee but it is a fraction of the cost of an emergency vet and they will tell you over the phone if you need to take them in/anything you can do yourself without having to take them in/or let you know what they've ingested is okay, no need to worry.

I have this number as a contact in my cell phone so it's there if I ever need it.

hi everyone, i am so sorry it took so long to repost.. i called the e-vet that night and they said to expect some vomiting, and hyperness fallowed by a crash. Rory did just that. she threw up quit a bit, bounced off the walls, and fell asleep. she is perfectly fine.. nothing too serious.

thanks for you help and concern!

take care everyone.
