Are microwaves safe for heating up food?

I haven't had the need to warm up any food from the fridge for the Dynamic Duo, but I was sitting here at work wondering how I was going to heat up the bit of wet food I set in the fridge before I left for work.

As of late, Vlad has really taken a liking to wet food, so I've been letting him and Oksana share a can between them. Oksana turns her nose up at wet, but I still set some out for her, which she takes a few bites from. When I left this morning, I put away the little bit they didn't eat in the fridge, not wanting to leave it out all day and let it get icky and crusty.

So I'm wondering, has anyone here warmed up food from the fridge for their pets in the microwave? I'm a bit apprehensive about doing this. I'm thinking maybe putting it in a zip lock and letting it sit in some warm water might be a better alternative.

I have heated up canned food in the microwave before, but only for a few seconds (depends on the power of your microwave). Stir it afterwards so that there aren't any 'hotspots'. These days I prefer to just mix some hot water into the food, since I usually add extra water to it anyway.

Okay, I hadn't thought to add some hot water. It'll be a bit hard when I get it out so the should soften it a bit too. Wonderful idea thanks.

I just didn't much care for the idea of putting their food in the microwave. I suppose a couple of seconds wouldn't hurt, but certainly I'd not actually cook anything in there for them.

I add hot water too, I find it works GREAT! softens it up and warms it. my cats DEFINITELY prefer warmed food over cold.

Thanks. Adding warm water seems to make the most sense. I think I'll just let my tap get really hot, I have a filter, and then put a little bit in with the food. Between the really hot water and the cold food, it should warm it up nicely.

I don't have a microwave but I know a couple who has an electric can opener and a microsave solely for the purpose of fooling their 2 cats into thinking they are getting a fresh can of soft food at each feeding time. They take food from fridge, then press the control on the can open to cause the buzz sound and then put the food in the microwave and the cats eat it with relish.

LOL, that's funny. You aren't kidding about can openers though. I get my food with the lids that don't need the openers and boy, I can't even have a can of tuna with my rice! I have the TV on in the evening, the air purifyer is one and makes a pretty loud noise, then the air conditioner is running and over all that, as quite as I am they still hear the can opening.
