Bloodwork?

My grandmoms vet is making her pay to get Holly bloodwork before she gets spayed.

Back tracking a bit.

Socks had 3 kittens back on December 20th. I kept Missy (girl) & Kasey (boy) and gave her Holly (girl). Thing is she does everything HER way I guess. For example, she feeds Holly store brand cat food and purina etc. And I feed my cats Innova Evo after someone on here suggested it and told me the benefits. I tried explaining to her and she doesnt believe me and I dont like it >_<

And she goes to a crappy vet. Just because they are the closet. I've been to this vet for 2 of my pets, and lets say they didnt come home:rip: Long story though, and too touchy so please dont ask.

Righto, so they are making her get Holly (the kitten) fricking bloodwork before she can get spayed.

Can someone please tell me what the heck they would want that for? The place is such a rip off and its pissing me off. I don't trust them and dont want the baby that I RAISED from MY CAT I found going to such a *****ty vet.

Can someone help me out here? Why would they need bloodwork? its a scam isnt it? They are tacking on all these ridiculous rules.

It's very hard to talk to my grandmom as shes a bit stubborn but can someone give me some tips on what to do ? I dont want my kitty getting sent there with the chance shes going to get butcherd up and my grandmoms going to get ripped off.


Her neighboor (and my family friend) is a vet tech and works for the vet I go to, would it be a good idea to have her talk to her?

Many vets will do bloodwork before surgery to check for hidden problems that might endanger an animal's life. As the pet gets older, they add more tests, but the tests they do for kittens should be fairly inexpensive. Unless the vet is asking for a lot of tests more geared toward older animals, pre-surgical blood tests are not unreasonable, IMO. Our vet offers it as an option, but leaves it up to the owner to decide what testing, if any, is done.

I think bloodwork is important particularly pre-surgery.

I actually think - even though there may have been probs with this vet - s/he is doing the right thing with the blood work request. It is always better to be thorough and not find a problem in the middle of surgery!!!

I think if you dislike your vet that much, you should find another. I would have the bloodwork done before surgery.

I have one dog that is a bleeder, learning something like that before a surgery with bloodwork means the vet would know a transfusion needs to be done before operating so the dog does not bleed to death on the operating table, my pets do not even get a dental done without blood work first to make sure nothing is wrong that could cause complication during anesthesia.

Don't know if there is much to add to this but... As a vet who now will only perform surgery with pre-op blood work - it is true most of the time the blood work comes out normal on young healthy appearing pets. The key word in the sentence is 'most'. Over the years, I have saved more than a few lives by NOT taking them to surgery. I think about those guys every time I answer this question. All the blood work on all the normal animals was worth saving those pets! Also the 'normal' blood work is a great point of reference if your pet every gets sick and needs blood work again.

I also agree with everybody else - blood work or no; if you don't like the vet - absolutely do NOT go there. Even if that vet is a great vet - without rapport, everything will be more difficult and in the end; the kitty loses out. Find a vet that you and your cat are comfortable with. (And have the blood work;) )

I would not consider any form of surgical treatment - including dental - without the pre-op bloodwork. I know from experience the type of conditions that can be diagnosed by the bloodwork and actually am more concerned about said possible results than the anesthetic.

Okay thanks. It just seemed like a scam to me because Missy and Kasey got fixed with no problems and my vet says they only need bloodwork for older pets.

I'm trying to get her to go to a different vet. I totally do not trust the one shes going too. Mine is really great and doesnt charge us for quick visits. And gives us free stuff all the time and hes been a vet for like 40+ years and used to take care of my moms pets when she was little. So hes known me my whole life. He's only an extra 10 minutes down the road but my grandmom would rather go to the one right across the street >_<

Thanks everyone. As long as its inexpensive thats good but I have the feeling they are going to charge her ike 200 bucks to go "oh you have a healthy 6 month old kitten"
