my 3 1/2 year old golden retriever eats rocks. we have garden pebbles in part of the yard and she eats them all the times and they come out the other end. she is well fed, and a proper weight and eats good food - dry bil jac. Is the rock eating a bad thing? can it harm her? does it indicate a problem?
thanks!

As far as I know, it can harm her. They can build up in her stomach, or any part of her digestive tract and cause problems.

They're not very good for the teeth, either. Tough to get dogs to stop eating them, though. We finally relandscaped with 4" and 6" rocks only...they're big enough so none of them can eat them! However, they still dig up pea gravel from the side yard and eat that. So we're going to put down dirt and sod over it this summer...

Lil Belle has been known to vomit red blood from the irritation to her stomach when she gets into the pea gravel... Luckily, though, we have not yet needed surgery--and after the yard work this summer maybe there won't be any more (or at least minimal) pebble eating at all! :fingerscr
