prin, those are wonderful pics :cloud9: thank you for taking the time to click and post away... you caught some wonderful dogs being their happy selves. am always impressed at how chilled and well-behaved boo n'jemma are.

rottielover, hubby and i were both very impressed by how sweet and well-mannered harley was, you can tell he was making huge efforts to be a good boy! and kayla is a sweetheart too!

bowser is a sweetie in a small package (sooo soft, wow!), bree is a huge fun puppy I would have liked to cuddle with more but she was too busy running her daddy tired on the 40-foot leash :D LOL! winnie is a gentle big ol' lady, couldn't see much of her either (:frustrated: too busy being tied to crazy beanies :frustrated: )

did i forget anyone? my mind is all jumbled up... that squabble between psycho-money the minpin and dakotah really shook me up  and i a SOOO relieved it wasn't more serious than one tooth puncture on the little guy's rump... he really asked for it though, and got lucky dakotah is a gentle giant, it could have turned out BAD

the sun was on us all!

It was nice to meet you all. Jemma was amazing. Beautiful blue eyes. Harley...well I'm just happy to see that harley did not leave with any injury..which he usually does when he's around my family:D Dakotah and Maika are just beautiful in person. Bree...too cute
Money...well I was afraid to approach and Bowser sweet, but not sure if he was playing dead when Winnie approached...( at least that's what the picture shows):D
I hope Money feels better and I hope the puncture wound isn't too deep.

It was a nice meet-up, thanks

i still feel so bad for the minpin. i hope he's ok, too - Lynlyn, please let me know ok? so happy his mum has pet insurance  probably a good idea, considering his, er... personality :o again, thank goodness dakotah exercised restraint with the little tazmanian devil. but i'm still pissed that he hurt the little guy at all :frustrated:

Looks like a just a great time you all had, and a lovely sunny day too.:cloud9:

How nice to see all the dogs and owners together like this. Beautiful pics these are!:lovestruck: So many gorgeous dogs, and amazing that they all got along so well together.:thumbs up Their calm demeanour and good doggie manners are certainly a credit to their owners. :thumbs up

Your Kayla is such a lovely little girl, Rottielover, what a sweetheart.

Good news the one small incident turned out ok, sure this is a big relief for you, Technodoll. That could have been bad, and hope the little guy is fine now. Unfortunate, but sounds like it was an unavoidable clash if the little dog was aggressive and became loose.

I'm a bit confused, though. Whose dog is Money?

Rottielover
May 20th, 2007, 05:01 PM
TD dakota was just protecting himself... If he wanted to hurt him, believe me he could have. I am so proud of him that he did so well.
I kept my distance from him, because I knew if he did the same thing to harley, Harley would not hae shown that much restraint, especially what has endured in the past.
Yes Lyn, please let us know how the little guy is doing

Shamrock, Money belongs to a friend of Lynlyn's, a very lovely young woman who has more patience than a dozen saints combined! :o

it's still embarassing that this happened at all. sigh. At least... well we had a little drama and no-one will forget that part of the meetup, eh? It does bring up the issue that I have with some small dogs who are afflicted with the "big dog syndrome" - they have no idea how small and vulnerable they are and will attack dogs that could potentially kill them with one bite  and some owners don't take that seriously (not money's mom though, she was GOOD!), they will always blame the big dog if their pocket-rockets gets hurt in a fight they *they* started.

I'm proud of my boy, no matter what. He had endured and completely ignored snarls, stares, growls, lunges and aggressive barks for 1.5 hours before the little guy broke free of his collar and ran directly to dakotah's head (he was laying on the grass) for a full-on attack. What was he to do... except react to protect himself... i know he did his best to just subdue the little guy without hurting him but in the process, one of his teeth did puncture the minpin's upper thigh. I'm still grateful that's all that happened. The akita breed has enough bad rap as it is

It was really great to meet everyone and discover faces to go along with their log in names and learn everyones real name (it is really kinda of confusing though) made some mistakes and call people by their log in names rather than their real names but hay it's ok right??

For sure, Mike can play with both. He'll throw it, Jemma will race to get it and Boo will take it from her and either bring it back to be the hero or run off and drop it somewhere and Jemma will find it and bring it back... :D

By limits I mean getting her riled up to the point where she's almost out of control and then stopping the play immediately. Dogs need to be taught that no matter how far something escalates, when you say stop, they have to stop that instant. When you do it when the dog is really, really agitated and you succeed, it becomes easier to do it when they're not so agitated... Does that make sense? :o

Jemma is the ultimate retriever. If we're at the dog park and the ball goes over the fence, I can send her out of the dog park alone and she'll go get the ball and come back. :o

I think I understand....this is my version of limits
when she plays with mike or russ and the guys can't take it any more I tell her enough and she stops right then and there, she then goes does something else (we are taking about inside) when she is outside and pushes me or get out of controll (leaning against my leg to a point i will fallor just plan crazy) I tell her enough and she stops.. she does not listen to well to the guys :D

Prin

lol it's not about being mean. You have to let her be a puppy still, for sure. She's not a 5 year old. But for me, adolescence is the perfect time to show them that they will play, just on your terms and not theirs. Puppies play all the time, and as they get bigger, that becomes a nuisance. With my dogs, I assessed early on how much attention and exercise they needed, and I made sure to give it to them every day. They know they'll get it, but they know I decide when and they just have to chill out till I say it's time. That's kind of what I'm talking about on a larger scale...

Update on Money: He's doing fine. A little upset at mommy for putting on the cone so he doesnt lick his wound too much. He's on antibiotics for the next ten days and Im wondering if its safe to give him a bit of tylonel for his pain because he's just laying around and when I try to touch him he starts yelping like a little girl.

Overall, it was a good experience because I hope he remembers now that he's not as big as other dogs. He's alot more calm now and he's going to be okay. But for now he's just being pampered by mommy and loving it! lol.

Prin, LynLyn tells me your a great trainer. I really need help with Money, he's too hyper and easily distracted to train. I got the basics down with pooping, eating, and going to his bed. Other than that I cant get him to not be so distracted when Im giving him directions. Any suggestions/advice?

AHHH! these boys!! i really hope this is the last incident for Money... the next one could be fatal, due to his size  give the boy a cookie and a hug for me ok? :goodvibes:

You did that a lot of the time, from what I saw, which was good. Even when you're stressed and the conditions aren't right, you have to shut off the world and be consistent. :o

Awww, I'll give him a cookie once he's feeling better. He doesnt want to eat anything and hasn't really eaten all day. I have to feed him with a spoon while he's in bed just so he'll eat something before taking his pills. I just did some research and Im going to give him a little teeny tiny bit of aspirin to relieve his pain. Turns out Tylenol is dangerous for dogs but Aspirin isnt. This is what I get for having a hyper active dog.

lol. The problem isn't me shutting off the world. I can shut off the world at anytime.. HE CAN'T. He'll sit and be quiet and good for most of the time but as soon as a bird flies overhead or a squirrel runs past us (no matter how far away it is from us) it's his duty to investigate!! I'm so frustrated but I cant give up. Im just running out of ways! I try the "I'm the alpha dog, you listen to me" type of training and it works for awhile until he realizes Im just uttering empty threats!

Great pics everyone. Looks like you all had a blast!!!!

By limits I mean getting her riled up to the point where she's almost out of control and then stopping the play immediately.

I just tried to do this, Willow won't wrassle! She just wants to run around and play 'catch me if you can'.

I feel bad though because my threats usually stem from hours of frustration and go something like "Im going the spank you if you dont get down from there." Sometimes it does the trick but most of the time I try not to hit him and I'll always stop his dad from hitting him.

no no don't spank him tell him down or off and then make him lie down or sit then give him praise, keep doing this until he listens to the word you use

Im going to try that. Usually when I get him down without the spanking there's usually something else that's sparked his interest.

Prin

Just make sure your vet knows ;) and make sure he has a meal with his aspirin. It can cause GI bleeding.

Yeah, it's not about spanking, it's about making him do what you ask him to do. If you say sit and he doesn't, you make him. If you say come and he doesn't come, you go get him, no matter what. You make him follow through with your commands.

i think money will be easier to train once he is receptive to communication, ie he pays attention to you - right now he's like a hyperactive child with ADD, his attention spans are short and he's only focused on his surroundings, not you... also exhibiting alot of nervous frustration and aggression. fortunately there are homeopathic remedies to help pets like him (like bach flower essences) and perhaps it would be time to consult a dog trainer who's specialized in small dogs?... :grouphug: hang in there, you love him and he's worth it!

breeze
May 20th, 2007, 09:37 PM
even though he has a short attention span does not mean he need meds just shorten his training but do it many times a day. instead of 3 times do it more like 9 times a day or more. it can be done without meds

Prin, LynLyn tells me your a great trainer. I really need help with Money, he's too hyper and easily distracted to train. I got the basics down with pooping, eating, and going to his bed. Other than that I cant get him to not be so distracted when Im giving him directions. Any suggestions/advice?I believe there are alot of people that can give you great advise You sound like you and Money need training! My advise is for you to start a thread for Money about this topic and add as much info as you can because each dog is individual.Let us know how old Money is,neutered or not, crate trained and/or any training such as puppy classes. Is Money food motivated or will he work for praise?
I can tell you that training is easier to correct behaviour if you work really hard at preventing the problems or behaviours than if you try to find the right *punishment*Also never ever forget the power of cheese!:D
