imabugg May 13th, 2007, 10:16 PM I have a 5 month old Rott, "Sam". When I came home Friday he was not acting right (not his- Look Mom is home, ankle biting). He was just laying around (like really tired). As time went on he got worse. He started throwing up. First couple of times it had grass in it, then it was just all bile.
I took him to vet (still there now). They have tested for Parvo (neg), toxicins (neg), heart worms (neg). Now saying could be pancreatitis.
He is in being given iv meds to stop the throwing up, and fluids. He is alert. Vet said once he has stopped all throwing up there is some other med she wants to try with him. But said for right now they are treating symtoms.
The vet asked about table scraps or garbage. None of my dogs are fed human foods, and he can not get to trash can. He eats Purina Puppy Chow.
He was perfectly fine when I left Friday for work. I have a gate in kitchen so he can not run threw house while I am gone. So he is either in kitchen or back yard(doggie door). We have searched yard for anything he could of gotten into. Nothing.\
I am worried about my baby. I found this site and thought I would ask if anyone has ever had this happen to their dog and what was the cause.
Thank you
hazelrunpack May 13th, 2007, 10:30 PM Has the vet checked for a blockage or bloat? Perhaps he ingested something that won't pass through. Although many things (like cloth, or stuffie innards, or socks...) won't show up on xrays, there's usually some evidence, like odd pockets of gas, that might indicate a blockage or bloat.
I hope your vet figures something out soon and Sam recovers quickly! :fingerscr It's so difficult when they're sick and you don't know why. :grouphug:
imabugg May 13th, 2007, 10:36 PM I am not sure if they looked for this or not, but I will be calling in the morning , to check on him. And I will ask.
hazelrunpack May 13th, 2007, 10:44 PM Meanwhile, sending good vibes :goodvibes: and best wishes for Sam's recovery. :fingerscr
Welcome to the forum, by the way. I hope when things calm down some and Sam is better, we'll have a chance to get to know you better. (And see some pics of Sam :) )
imabugg May 13th, 2007, 10:58 PM Thank you.
This is Samson "Sam"
LittleMissLevi May 13th, 2007, 11:02 PM I also have a rottweiler, 7 years old, and she has been healthy all her life until recently. I learned that rottweilers are prone to digestive problems, particulary food allergies. Might want to ask your vet about this too since it is so common and much easier to treat if caught early. Good luck!
hazelrunpack May 13th, 2007, 11:03 PM He looks like a sweetheart, imabugg! he he I love the way he's using the top stair as a chair for his butt and the second stair as a place to put his feet. :D
Thanks for sharing a pic of Samson!
erykah1310 May 14th, 2007, 05:08 PM I dont know here, but what about Giardia? Is that a possiblilty where you are?
Im not even sure if the symptoms are the same, but I would ask about that too if they are.
I too have to comment on the cuteness of the picture, I love Rotties, they hold a special place in my heart.
I hope he recovers well and you can move from this horrible problem.
When he does, we will be here to guide you in choosing a better kibble for him.
Well wishes being sent out :goodvibes: :fingerscr  for a speedy recovery.
LavenderRott May 14th, 2007, 05:43 PM In my experience, Giardia is less vomiting and more diarhea.
I would have him checked for a blockage as well.
When you get him home - try feeding him a better food. If you do some research here, you will find lots of suggestions that may well cost more, but since your dog is using more of the nutrients - he will be pooping less. And anyone who cleans up after a dog knows how important pooping less is. :D
imabugg May 14th, 2007, 07:41 PM I called the vet this morning and asked about bloat and blockage. Vets have ruled these out. They are leaning more towards- Sam ate Mistletoe (which grows here year round in our Oaks).
Dr said he was doing better, no more throwing up. They were going to remove IV and wait little bit then try liquids.
After work I went by and saw Sam. He does look alot better. He actually stood up and was wiggling his butt. He was so happy to see Mommy ( but not near as glad as I was to see him).
I asked several questions while there. And answered a bunch.
Dr said he really thinks it was Mistletoe. Also said that once it is out of his system completely he will be totally fine.(as long as he does not eat anymore) We do have this in 1 tree in back yard. I never thought of it. I have 3 other dogs and none of them have ever messed with it. I can tell you one thing though, that stuff will be removed even if we have to get rid of tree.
They were gonna start his liquids after 4 pm today. If holds them down over night, then they start him on bland soft diet. And then go from there.
I was amazed at how he looked today. Nothing like the very sad sick baby I layed in kitchen floor with Friday night.
Thank you to everyone who answered my question. I am very attached to each one of my critters. (4 dogs and 4 birds). They are so much more then animals, they are a very big part of our family.
Thank you all again.
erykah1310 May 14th, 2007, 08:21 PM Thank goodness, I am happy to hear that things are indeed looking up.:D
sissani May 14th, 2007, 08:38 PM Oh good! Glad it was something easily dealt with, and hope he gets better soon!! :goodvibes:
imabugg May 14th, 2007, 08:38 PM We are too.
Sam looked so much better today. But what really got me was when he stood up. Because when I took him to vet he was having alot of trouble doing so. I have a Mustang( which is very low) and he could not even step up into it, I had to pick him up.
When I left vet I was crying again, except this time because it is looking good for him. And all I want is my big baby better and home.
:) :) :) :) :)
Tomorrow we will see how he does with food.
imabugg May 15th, 2007, 08:39 PM Sam got to come home today. He looks so much better. He has not let my daughter out of his site since he got home.
Dr still says it was the Mistletoe. So, now we remove it or the tree.
I just heard the doggie door open, a sound I really never paid much attention to until he was gone for 4 days.
Thank you all for your ideas and support.
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D
sissani May 15th, 2007, 08:48 PM Oh I'm so glad he's ok!! :grouphug:
imabugg May 15th, 2007, 09:17 PM This is picture of Sam showing my daughter who the boss is.
