Bernese Mountain Dog not eating, snoring, reverse sneezing

My baby Cabela started snoring when she sleeps about 2 weeks ago. I thought it was strange, but she seemed to be acting fine and I wans't worried about it. She was also occasionally reverse sneezing and snorting.

Last Thursday she stopped eating and became extremely lathargic. I took her into the vet Sat morning and they ran blood work, which all came back good. No signs of infection, kidneys and liver all working great, etc. They also did an x-ray of her throat and nose area and did not see anything strange. As we waited for full blodd results, I was able to get her to eat some soft dog food Sat night and Sunday morning. Monday morning she did not want to eat it. I called to get results, which as I said earlier were all good. She was a little dehydrated so I took her in to have some fluids put it in and also to run blood work once more to check for infection. Blood work still came out good.

The vet decided to put her on an antibiotic "just in case" and gave her first does this morning. I boiled some hamburger and rice and was able to get her to eat a small amount, but then had to hand feed her this evening.

I did notice that she started to drool some thick saliva today. She will drink water, but not very much. She seemed to want to stay outside all day today, so I suspect she had a fever and was hot.

I'm terrified that something just isn't right and hate the fact that the Vet can't tell me what's wrong.

Is there anyone out there that has similar symptoms or suggestions as to what is causing this???

We will wait to see if the antibiotics start to make her feel better, if not they have suggested putting her out to thoroughly look in her throat and nose.

HELP!!

First off welcome to our forum (and I'd better warn you now, if you haven't posted pix of your Berner puppy you had better get on it ! :D or you'll catch it! ~ there are alot of Berner-lovers here:lovestruck: ).

Are you able (with help) to get her mouth WIDE WIDE WIDE open for a peek with a high-intensity flashlight ? Can you put your hand in and all around her mouth ? The reason I ask, is that one of my gal's (part Berner ~ they love to gnaw don't they ?) once had a piece of wood from a branch lodged in the roof of her mouth just behind her front teeth. Similar symptoms and not obvious until I went *digging*.

I promise as soon as I figure this picture thing out there will be pics~ She really is our first born child!! :o)

I haven't been able to fully get her mouth open, but did do some investigating last night, like wiggly each tooth and feeling around. She wasn't wild about it, but I think it's because I've been a bit more of a nusance to her~

Wouldn't the x-rays show something if there was something? Thanks for the suggestion, I'll be sure to check right now. It sure sounds like somethings stuck in her throat??

Welcome to the forum, Alisa.

Xrays will show very dense objects, but not things like plastic, grassballs, cloth, some bark...

I hope you can figure out what's going on with Cabela quickly and get her on the road to recovery. :grouphug:

I took her in this morning as they thought it would be best to put her under and examine her throat/nose areas. As soon as we got there the Doc felt a HUGE mass in her throat. Which must have grown overnight, because I've never felt it before and have been doing my own examinations for the last week. She had a temp of 103.9 and surprisingly the Doc felt really good about what she found. She said that she's almost 100% sure it's an absess filled with puss, so they'll go in and drain it all out.

Of coure, since she is a Berner, there is always that chance of cancer....but I'm not even allowing myself to go there right now.

Please say a quick doggie prayer for her as she in there as I type. I will update again when I find out more.

Thanks

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers~

I picked Cabela up today, tail wagging and ready for a treat! It was so great to see her spirits lifted. They went ahead and drained the absess, but had to suture in a drain tube for the next couple of days. She was on some pain medication so seemed to feel a lot better. They said no weird tissue so no need for a biopsy!!! THANK GOODNESS!!

She even ate a little hamburger, rice, and cheese. Been drinking lots of water and going to the bathroom too~ They had to send her home with a cone so she wouldn't scratch out the drain tube...poor thing. She, of course, hates it and looks at me with these pouty eyes, saying "Please Mom, take this thing off me".

Looks like we are on the road to recovery!! YAY!! I finally got a picture up too, hope you enjoy it~

I'm going to go look for it this second. You must feel like a 200 lb. weight has been lifted. Again, good for you for being one of us (crazy-persistent: don't tell me ME there's nothing to worry about, I'LL tell YOU when there's something to worry about ~ it's a good crazy we encourage). Okay, now tofrantically search for pix...
