We're Finally Going

rainbow
March 6th, 2007, 03:24 PM
Well, we're finally going to get Chase's TPLO done. We're leaving tomorrow morning at 6:00am. We have a consultation with the vet in Kelowna at 11:00am and then he'll xray Chase in the afternoon and he'll have his operation on Thursday and we pick him up Friday and come home.

Poor Logan has to go to the kennel tonight and that makes me so sad as we've never left him before. We were going to take him along and put him in the back seat of the truck on the way home but he doesn't like riding there....he prefers the truck box. And, besides, I might need the back seat for my shopping spree. :D

I'm glad this is finally going to be over but not looking forward to the long recuperation and having to keep the boys totally away from each other.

And, it's soooo nice out today but it's supposed to rain/snow for the whole time we're gone. :frustrated:

Also, the Pack doesn't recommend valium for your mama, since she'll need your senses sharp--so they're sending gobs of magical setter drool to you (virtually, of course...:D ) for use in her tea. It's supposed to have calming properties. hazel almost managed to market it, but the distributor accidentally broke one of the bottles one day and was so grossed out he black-listed us! Just a few drops to a cup and she'll be able to handle anything! :dog:

Chico, TPLO is a specialized operation for torn knee ligaments. It's recommended for young, active dogs instead of the old way were they use something like fishing line to make the repairs which is likely to stretch or break over time.

And, yes, my boys and the kitties will be getting spoiled from Petcetera. :D

Good luck to you Rainbow and Chase!:grouphug: My boy had his knee surgery 2 weeks ago Monday. He is doing so well! I thought the recovery would be much slower than what it actually is. He still has a long way to go, but he is amazingly well at the same time! Copper didn't have the tplo done, he had the lateral fabellar suture (basically the way you put it - the old way). At Copper's age(6yrs), the vet thought this one would be fine for him as he will never be overly active as he once was anyway. I trust her opinion, so this is the procedure we decided on. I have no regrets as I'm sure you won't either. The whole procedure will probably be harder on you emotionally and mentally than it will be on Chase! Trust me on this one! Again good luck with it all!:grouphug:

Everything went well. :thumbs up The vet and all the girls were really nice and they loved Chase because he's so goofy and made them smile all day. The poor little guy's leg and whole back end is shaved though and he looks so pathetic. The vet gave us a cd of the operation but I haven't played it yet.

We got a wire cage on sale at Petcetera and Chase has been so good about going in it  .....I am totally amazed. We even left him in it when we went to pick up Logan and he didn't get upset. Logan doesn't even bother him either. I put the mattress from the twin bed on the floor beside him and that's where I sleep at night so I can hear him if he starts licking.

I even found an orange cuz with solid feet and it was only $11.99 :highfive: And, a giggler ball and canvas stuffies and special cookies. The cats got new beds and a tunnel and a small condo. No digicam though. Hubby says I have to wait until he goes back to work.

Logan was very happy that mom finally came and got him. The girl said he was very leery of her. He would come up to her when she fed him but when she took him outside to run around he wouldn't although she had no trouble getting him to go back in his enclosed run. He also kept dumping his water dish which is something he's never done at home.

Hubby goes to the specialist next Wednesday. He is recovering fine but still can't lift anything heavy.

Glad to hear the Rainbow clan has survived (so far anyway !) the TPLO ordeal.

If the EC gets to be too frustrating for Chase, OG made a great suggestion when Ceili had her "whizzer" done. There is a specialized collar that looks and fits much like a cervical collar (the "whiplash" foam & velcro neck collar you buy at the drugstore) ~ if you had a cervical collar at home you could put that on him for a spell.

We did go see the vet after he lost 2 just to be sure all was ok and the 3rd one came out the day before our appointment. His incision is healing very nicely - even though it looked like he was butchered and thrown back together!!

How does Chase's incision look? Is it straight or jagged looking?? I'm just wondering because Copper's had looked awful!

3.5 weeks ago. We go next week for another check up. He should start putting his toes to the ground when he walks, but he hasn't been doing this too often as of yet. He will stretch his leg out fully, so that's a good start. We must work on building his muscle back up. Poor guy, his leg went to mush! He lost all of his muscle tone in that leg. And he too was completely shaved - the fur is grwing back in nicely now. It was hard massaging his leg after being shaved - didn't feel so good!

I'm so glad the procedure went well and everybody is back home safe! I hope you get some solid rest soon! Concerning the noisy crate: We put a blanket between the plastic crate bottom and the wire and that helped with the noise a LOT. Also, the edges where the pieces come together can be noisy so we use cable or zip ties and tightened those babies down real good. The noise factor went waaaaaay down. I'm not sure if this is the cause of the noise, but there's some tips free of charge! :D

Thanks for the tips, Brandy. I'll have to try the blanket underneath the bottom piece. I'll let you know if it works.
