Granulated rawhide chews?

I know that rawhide chews aren't recommended for dogs as they can easily bite off pieces that lodge in their throats and choke them. However, I was wondering if the granulated or ground rawhide chews were safe or safer (of course given while supervised). We'd like to give our little guy something to chew on other than his toys- he likes edible nylabones, but they just don't seem to hold his attention very long (he'll take a week to go through one). He has had a couple of ground rawhide sticks and he loves them, so we were considering them. Any recommendations or advice?

i would rather give my dogs real raw bones to chew on... at least they are natural, not processed, and offer some degree of nutrition :) oh and many butchers will give them to you for free if you ask :thumbs up
