What the heck is going on

Campus life at Montreal's Concordia University temporarily ground to a halt Tuesday morning after police responded to reports of an armed gunman that turned out to be false.

Police called to the Loyola campus had surrounded several buildings, but called back the SWAT teams just after noon ET after finding a long black bag containing martial arts weapons in a locker.

Police spokesman Laurent Gingras could not corroborate reports of a suspect.

A janitor had contacted 911 around 9:30 a.m. ET, after a man in camouflage and carrying a long black bag was spotted, said university spokeswoman Chris Mota.

"Our security officers at Loyola campus were alerted by an employee who said he saw someone walking to the science complex, carrying what they felt was a suspicious package."

There were no reports of gunshots, but students were evacuated from the science building, and several others were locked down while SWAT teams secured the floors.

The police operation had sent the campus into high alert, and students waited patiently for new information, according to journalism student Sikander Hashmi, who had been instructed, along with his classmates, to stay inside.

"We've been told we can't leave the building. Otherwise we're calm, maybe a bit jittery and nervous, but we're OK in our classroom," he told CBC around 10 a.m.

Rumours flew around the west-end campus, fuelled by cellphones and text messages. The memory of the Dawson College shootings last September are still fresh for many Concordia students.

The police operation prompted nearby Loyola High School to lock in students as a precaution.

Classes at Loyola campus were cancelled until 4 p.m. ET.

Yeah, but Loyola is a lot of buildings. Tons of places for innocent people to hide. :cloud9:
