Weird question but a puzzling one?

My male cocker spaniel who is unaltered (hes going to be a show dog:fingerscr hopefully he was going to go to a show next week but due to gypsy's illness  weve postponed until shes fully recovered and order has been restored) has never lifted his leg while urinating having become a family joke does anyone else have a male dog that doesn't lift his leg?

I have heard that a male dog has to see another male lift his leg to pee, that it is a learned behaviour, I don't know for sure.

The only time Jag lifts his leg is when he is peeing on something.other than that no he kind of squats or stands.

Yeah Hunter may or may not lift his leg. If he means to pee on something (like a post, etc.) he will, but if just peeing on the lawn, he usually don't:shrug:

It doesn't really matter if he is fixed or not, some do and some don't.

I have had male fosters that do both, squat and lift, on a funny note one of my girls lifted her leg to go on a tree our foster went on, didn't quite work out for her:rolleyes:

My Hunter has never lifted his left. He squats but he has a manly squat.;)
Many of the male fosters I have had have also squatted. Others have lifted their leg slightly.
My neighbor's dog which just turned 8 months old lifts his leg higher than his head and his owner is proud of it.
I guess it depends on the dog. Hunter has seen other dogs lift their legs and he choses to do his many squat.

I've only seen my dog Guinness lift his leg once (and it was only slightly lifted). I was actually wondering the same thing, so glad you asked this question! Mostly he just stands and pees directly on the ground below, or sometimes on the sidewalk.

Not only does Benny not lift his leg, but he squats in such a strange way that he often pees on his front leg. Guess it keeps his legs warm in the winter. :D

Bobby has never lifted his leg to pee and he has seen other male dogs do this - he just chooses not to! Saves my garden plants and shrubs for sure :)

Dracko squats and always has unless we are out for a walk and he pees on a pole or something that another dog has peed on. I asked my vet about this a long time ago as I thought maybe something was wrong with him. LOL She said it is jsut a preference for the dog.

Meik and puppy are both avid leg lifters... Bailey is a squatter.
Kita will remark after the males have by pointing her rear to the "tire" we'll say, and then pee... shes quite good at it too:D Looks kinda silly.
I think its just a preference.

When I was growing up, our female family dog, a Keeshond, would often lift her leg to pee. I don't recall how her aim was...

When Nicky (my male Pom) pees, he lifts his leg so high that he looks like an uber-flexible gymnast. Sometimes he looks like he'll fall over if he stretches that little leg any But that's only if he's peeing ON something. If he has no post and no shrub to mark and is left with nothing but the boring lawn to pee on, he kind of leans into the ground, lifting his leg ever so :pawprint:

Roscoe does the lunge too. He occasionally will lift, but that is more for marking. When he really has to go, it's the lunge. He also walkes sometimes as he's peeing. Crazy animals we have!

Charlie does the lunge thing to hes never lifted his leg but i guess thats a good thing

Mocha's mum

I think it's a learned behaviour. Mocha never lifted his leg, and then I went away on course and he spent some quality time with his brother. And lo and behold, when I came back, he was lifting his leg. However, because of his back injury, he sometimes doesn't have the strength to lift his leg, but he gets an A for effort!! :D

He only lifts the one leg though (his right). Anyone else's pup only do this? Maybe he's right - pawed!! Ha ha ha!!!

Simon does the lunge/squat too, and on occasion lifts his leg. He was a fulltime leg lifter when he first came home, but over time, mimicked my Peaches (female) and learned the squat. On the flip side, she started to do the post pee/poo scrape, which was hysterical to watch cuz she'd fall flat over the first times she'd try it :D

My boy Winston squats as well...He will lift it occasionally for a pole but he never even started to do that until he was about 3 yrs old!

Yeah, Boo too. He only lifts his right. If there's nothing on the right to pee on, he semi squats.

Took Boo a long time to master peeing with the leg up without peeing on his front paws... IMO, it's better to squat than to need a bath after every pee...:frustrated:

Both the boys I have now as well as any I've had before have only lifted their legs if there is something to pee on otherwise they do the "manly squat".
