I was wondering if feral male cat spray can smell like skunk? My *ahem* father feels he has a skunk under the building but all he has caught is big feral cats. My therory is that no skunk is gonna be with the cats cause the cats will kill him. I have a suspision that its the cats spraying? I'm afraid for the poor little skunk cause if they catch it they said they will kill it GRRRRRR! I say GO LITTLE SKUNK!!!

Well it could possibly be a skunk.
On my dads street(where I moved from)Has quite a few feral cats. And lots of skunks.Last May when my daughter and I were leaving for the airport,It was 4am and waiting for the Airport Limo.I brought our luggage outside. On the lawn were 3 skunks and a feral. The cat was freaking. And before it could attack, the skunks sprayed the cat.He took off. This is not the first time this has happened. There are alot of feral cats in the area and alot of skunks.Trust me,I have woken up to the skunk smell in the wee hours of the morning. And I figured some cats have ticked them off.LOL
So it sounds like the smell could be the skunks and not the cats spraying.

Ewwww! I have a skunk somewhere on my property and many times I've woken up in the summer, gagging on the smell wafting through my open window. It's pretty unmistakable. Tom cats smell strong, but it's nothing like a skunk.
And you don't need to worry about the cats killing a skunk! Even bears are driven off by one well-aimed blast!:p

Amaruq,I hope your dad will not kill the skunk, right now I suppose it's breeding season and many more skunks will be on the way,so killing one is kind of senseless and cruel,if he has a den under your dads deck or something like that I suppose he could have it removed, hopefully there are no little "peppi le Pew's".
I usually have a couple of skunks in my backyard, but they come after dark chomping on birdsseds..under my birdfeder,my cats are inside,so maybe the skunks will scare away any neighbor-hood cats and that's ok with me.
Many mornings I wake up to the unmistakable odor and sometimes during the night, but they always leave, they are just part of the Canadian landscape and nature.
You just have to make sure there are no perfect places for them to make a den,if you have permanent smelly tenants it might be a problem

Also,I have a pair of night-vision binoculars, tell your dad to get some(just kidding!!!)it's actually amazing what goes on in your backyard after dark, especially in the spring with all kinds of babies, between coons, possums, skunks and groundhogs(not all at once!!) it's a regular zoo out there:p
