they were so happy and playful tonight. after work i bundled up in my snowsuit & anti-cold gear, and took them to a very long field where the wind whipped our faces at -15C but they loved it, ran and ran and had the zoomies and we played hide and seek, so nice to see them in good shape. Yesterday they both had bad tummies so no dinner and they were flat out zombies. all is back to normal today - and i feel great for exercising even if it was dark and evil cold. gotta love doggies for that :cloud9:

Yay! I love the Beanie fix! How do you train them to not eat the cookie on their paws? I've heard that Poms are supposed to be very smart, but Nicky can't even pick up "shake"..lol :frustrated:

practice! :D the obedience lessons helped a lot though, i must admit. A little work every day with the "stay" command does wonders, in all situations - not just food. And i'm sure Nicky is super-smart, some dogs just don't like to work with their paws... you have to find a trick he wants to do and is good at to boost his confidence - is he food or toy movitated? :dog:

He doesn't quite know what to do with toys, so I'm going to have to go with "treat/food motivated."

Nicky knows how to sit, come, and "go lay down", and at that point he'll go lay down in his bed. That's about it
He doesn't even know how to play :(
When I try to teach him new things, he becomes overly submissive and sit at my feet while hanging his head very low. It's heartbreaking  So then I just stop.

i guess since you rescued him, there must have been some traumatic things in his past that he can't get over, at this point. :( some dogs' best talent is for snuggling, being there when you need them, being cute and just a happy presence in your life.

my friend's pitbull has never had any trauma yet when you try to teach him new things he is super submissive, he will do "tricks" but never with enthusiasm and he's not a fast learner - yet he's a very smart dog. he lives for his toys and chasing the ball and that's about it! his owner never "worked" him as a puppy so that doesn't help :frustrated:

Yeah, I think my little man has been through some pretty hard times:sad:
Even if I'm too enthusuastic when I come home from work and am excited to see him, sometimes he doesn't get excited like he should, he'll hang his lil head and sort of army crawl towards me. :( I think he must've gotten yelled at to "GO LAY DOWN!!" a lot because the very first time I said it, I didn't yell or anything and he made a bee line for his bed! Poor lil guy
Anyway, sorry for the :offtopic: thread jack :o

P.S.
I'm terrified of big dogs, but lately I'm feeling brave and seriously thinking about adopting a big dog. Everytime I see your beanies, I want one, and I feel brave and think "ok, I could do that!" lol

thanks so much everyone for your kind words on my bear-kids :o

mahealani, owning and living with a big dog is different than just meeting or passing them outside... they seem to shrink when you get used to them! more to love and more to cuddle with, is what i say :cloud9: if you know someone with a big gentle dog you could get comfortable with, it would be a good first step! it's not really the size of the dog that matters, it's the aura they carry and how secure they make you feel around them  (some small dogs scare the ***** out of me, they're so unpredictable and have this mean glint in their eyes... just a couple of dogs in my neighborhood. brr!) LOL

LMFAO!!! That's hilarious. I am friends with the maintenance man at my complex who has a pitbull, of all things, and she's an ANGEL! Now that breed scares the ***** out ME! I think it's the way their heads are shaped and the slanted eyes that gets me. But anyway, Buddha, the pitbull, is a darling and I try to pet her everytime I see her but I still have this overwhelming feeling that she's going to turn on me and rip my arm off for no reason..lol
Maybe I should adopt a pitbull? lol
