Dog has low protein..???

Hi,
Wondering if anyone can help or direct me..Our 4 yr Yorkie has been in the emergency clinic for the last 4 nights, which resulted from a bloating in the belly.
What alerted us was that he had a bad case of diarrhea followed by solid stool 2 days later while all the time he's been very listless and quite lethargic. We noticed that his belly had also swollen up, so now we're going onto the 5th day and much much dollars later at the vets. The problem is the vets cannot tell us definitely whats wrong with him. He admitted plasma to give him protein because his level was 22. They have him on an IV drip currently and doing more blood & stool tests. They think his liver may not be functional. Now they want to do a ultra sound followed by a bioposy and possibly an enteropy.
Can anyone tell me if I'm being taken in by shifty vets or is there some other
direction that we need to tell them to go. Lastly what type of prognosis
is there for our once healthy pooch. He's been fed white chicken and rice
along with Royal Canin as his diet.
All advise is welcome..

So odd, our Yorkie Romeo (years old) started to have the exact same
problems 2 days earlier.

We ran blood-test, X-Rays and now we are suppose to do the $500 ultra
sound procedure. We have a great Vet, but he doesn't have any other
advise right now. He said it might be a tumor.

Romeo used to jump and explore, now he is just sleeping and does
not want to get up. His body is very tense and hard. Protein level very low.

We started feeding him egg whites, but now he vomits when we try to feed
it to him.

His liver is fine and the small intestines do not leak fluids.

You are obviously a few days ahead of us, please let us know what your
status is.

We are feeding him L/D Hills Prescription food right now.

Thanks so much to all of you.

O.k. Romeo got his ultrasound and the diagnosis is clear. He has IBD, you can read more behind this link: www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1571&articleid=305

Cortisone and a special Diet will be necessary in the future.

Ask your vet.

All the Best.
