yeah....I've always wanted a Dane, and I know the seniors are harder to adopt out....this girl has such a sweet face. Plus, the fact that she's living with a boxer takes it home for me :o

I'm not a huge fan of Afghans, but I must admit she's a beauty

But if I can't have her, I'll take this guy.

However there are a few that I really would like.
The Dane I was keeping an eye out for seems to have found a home ( yay)

But these two have been on my mind too lately. My 2 favorite breeds.

As for me, this girl has already found a (hopefully) forever home, but I would have LOVED to adopt her (or her puppies): http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=7203196

I would LOVE a BMD as our next rescue, so here are a couple that I found... :D

I'm actually having a hard time finding a match anywhere in Ontario.... The criteria we've kind of narrowed down for our next (rescue) dog is:

1. Has to be good with kids (we have young ones so not everyone will adopt out to a family with kids under 8);
2. I'd like a BMD, Newf, Saint or Dane, DH has his heart set on a BMD;
3. I'd like a 95+ lbs dog. DH and I have agreed that we'll add 2 dogs in the future after we no longer have our shepherd, but only one of them will be a BIG dog, so I really would like for it to ideally be between 100-130 lbs, but then again of course that's not the most important criteria at all!

Now there are quite a few cute Saints in the states that would fit the bill & I keep my eyes open for Quebec rescues too, unfortunately you guys get more of the breeds I love in rescue up there.....

If we didn't have kids we'd be able to open our doors to a lot of other dogs with more baggage that really tug at my heart. I deal with quite a few GSDs that are just wonderful, but we've decided that a 'gentle giant' is more the type of dog that would fit into our family next.

oh speaking of BMD's ... well, this one's not on petfinder.com (BMDLuver) god willing

You're right, the family that ends up with this special boy will be VERY lucky! He seems to just have the most amazing attitude  I'd love to adopt him too if BMDLuver thought he would be ok in a home with kids! Hmmmm, maybe we'll have to fight it out Golden Girls :D Please get better asap SAM!!!

Speaking of BMDs if distance wasn't an issue these 2 boys would be great since they need a home together, that way I'd get two! But fat boy's name would have to be changed asap, that just doesn't sit well with me: http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=7131964

I actually did manage to negotiate 2 BIG dogs with hubby already, but then I ruined it all! Lol, no but he's into hunting and would really love a field companion with him on his outings and so I thought it was only fair that I'd give in a bit too..... I would just love to have 2 big ones though! Hmmm, maybe 2 big ones and then a smaller hunting dog? Well thankfully we still have our old shepherd and we of course want her to live for as looooong as possible, so hopefully these decisions won't have to be made for quite a few more years :fingerscr

Ok then! The 2 BMD boys would be my choice! I can go for 2 since they're in the same listing :D Now since I'm really dreaming away it would be great if the hip dysplasia wouldn't be an issue for one of the boys, but we would definitely deal with it!

Why this is leagal is beyond me! It's been illegal in Finland (where I'm originally from) for over 10 years & tail docking for well over 5 years.... If you enter an ear cropped / tailed docked dog into a dog show, the registered owner HAS TO live in a country where it's legal (U.K. for example), otherwise you will be disqualified. So for those idi*ts who'd want to import one to get 'the look', it's not worth it. Besides, the dog wouldn't fair well at all with all the natural ears and tails that pretty much all but the senior dogs have. I love Canada in so many ways, but this is not one of them :frustrated:

Her ears were cropped by a veterinarian that did a poor job and this cute puppy has to pay the price. Her ears were cut in a long “show crop”, but they rotted during the healing process and half of her ears fell off. Thanks! I'm sure it's not going to be easy.... You just have to be that much more careful for the kids & the dog's sake too. I can undertsand rescues generally being very careful about adopting to people with kids, but hopefully there will be a good fit out there for us! Having a pup with young kids would be a lot of work, not to mention wanting to go the rescue route for obviuos reasons to begin with!

If you search some of the Ohio pounds believe me if you can arrange transport or get there they will let you adopt with no real questions asked , because of the large numbers they simply euthanize any that do not get adopt within a few days, some can wait a little longer if they have the roomthey will hold them for a few extra days if you seriously want a need to wait till the weekend to go there And the adoption fees are very low around $60 dollars including neutering, some don't offer neutering , you just need to ask them to have them vaccinated if you are bring them across the border some have low cost spays and neuters, which I simply had put on my credit card, I had went down to one where I got my now granddog Lucy and 3 beagles for a Toronto rescues.

The pounds unlike the shelters or spca's only will hold dogs for a few days, the state requires them to hold the dogs for 3 days and that is all the money they are given for food if they have donations they may be able to hold dogs a bit longer

I try not to look at the pounds here too often after trying to get a younger greyhound into a rescue , paying to extended her stay and failing and learning she was euthanized. :(

Though improving slowly with more rescues and shelters in Ohio still quite bad

This is just a list of the very high kills, from reading I guess the gas chambers still exist and are in use in Ohio

This boy was eventually taken to a high kill shelter. Apparently purchased from a breeder (great breeder :yuck: ) They decided not to feed him, keep him outside with the snakes and put out their cigars on him.

His foster mom picked him up as skin and bones, covered in burns, the snake bite and full of worms.

She has since then been in and out of the vet. Cleared up the worms, fixed the snake bite, added 30+ lbs to his frame and he has healed without scars.

I dont have updated pictures yet, but he is being picked up today, so I will post when they are sent to me ;)

He does have a bit of seperation anxiety that he is working on. She believes it is because he is so afraid of being left and starved. I work from home, so he won't have to go through this.

He loves other dogs, and does well with small children. Shes tried leaving him for up to 6 hours and he did very well in his crate.

He dosent seem to have any skin issues, and has great hearing and eyes. I am just shocked that someone could do that to him. He definatley deserves only the best.

I will post pictures as soon as I get them :) I should get a phone call soon that he has been picked up and on his way to Indiana :)

Woohoo:D

Apparently they dont require adoption fees at all anymore. They just request a donation if you adopt. We were there visiting when we were in TO two weeks ago. I was surprised.

I was just going to say that greaterdane, see number 5 payment http://www.torontohumanesociety.com/adopt/adoptionprocess.asp

I'm not really surprised, I don't want to get too off topic, so I'll just say, that because they don't euthanize very many of their animals, a mere 9%, they have an over-crowded shelter, and they seem to have these free clinics more and more often. Some of the people who worked there are still on strike over the issue.

She probably will still be there after this weekend, many of the pitbulls have been there for months already, and have little hope for adoption, they might live the rest of their lives in the cages there:sad: , which could be sped up because of the over crowding, apparantly illness spreads quicker these days, and that's where the 9% fit in.

I already know they won't give me a pitbull, I have my little kids and the cats. There were a couple there that needed a country home. Check out Rupert.... http://www.torontohumanesociety.com/adopt/adoptiononline.asp

I don't mean to rain on your parade Prin but are you allowd to own 3 dogs in Laval ? If not you would be taking a BIG chance. Check how the bylaws are written, is the limit 2 dog on a property or just ownership of 2 dogs, if just ownership then up just need to find someone willing to register the dog in their name and if someone complains the your are just caring for it.

Prin
October 29th, 2006, 09:46 PM
Not likely that anybody is going to file a complaint here... This is dog street. The people in front have at least 4 dogs (those are the ones I've seen) and every house except one has at least one dog. Plus I'm the dog bringer-backer.:D If they get on my bad side, I'm not sure their dogs will make it straight home. Just kidding. But seriously, everybody here is very blasé about the dog situation. Everybody's dogs run away once in a while and nobody gets upset. It's also very quiet though, nobody lets their dogs bark forever here.

Anyway, nuff defending my neighborhood... I'm not worried.;) Oh, and we also know the dog enforcer up here.

And I mean, most people think Jemma and Boo are the same dog.:D

Limits on the number of dogs you can own is exactly why i moved out of the sudbury area. I dont remember the actual ratio of cats and dogs you can have but I was out of range at the time. ( Meik, Kita and Keira) when i found this house the first thing I did was inquire with West Nippissing about their bylaws and there was none.... Just the normal licence laws.
Although I register my dogs with the Sudbury east office ( closest town) the licences are 1/3 the price, and when WN went around checking for licences they had no problems with the dogs being registered in another township... their reasoning for not worrying was " it would most likely be that dog catcher who would end up picking them up if they did run off"
I scored there. SE has never bothered me either, they raised an eyebrow the first time I went in for 3 licences but when i said I technically lived in WN ( by a whopping 1/2 km) there was no prob.

Phew! :D

Embarrassed is : o (without the space).

Oh, and the bylaws are why I really should get a senior (permanent ;)) foster instead of a puppy, even if a puppy does pull at my heartstrings once in a while.

I tried to get a really old dane last winter, and my man agreed to it. I don't know if it's a terrible idea, but I kind of want him to go through the death of a dog that is not Jemma or Boo, just to prepare him a bit more. He doesn't know that he'll get so attached to the old dog (I know he will), but I still think it would be less devastating than losing his first pets without having gone through it before ever.

I also know that it's a one in a million dog that my man will say yes to, so the odds of the bylaws actually being a problem are pretty slim since I have to cross so many hurdles before getting any 3rd doggy anyway (so many that it's not likely to happen at all ;)).

It's fun to dream. :o

I don't mean to rain on your parade Prin but are you allowd to own 3 dogs in Laval ? If not you would be taking a BIG chance. If anyone place a complaint to the city, they will make you get rid of one dog. Or else you have to move and I don't know too many city that allows 3 dogs .... and even then, the city won't give you time to sell.:(

Does anyone know by chance what the limit is in Toronto? I'm under the impression that it's 3.

I don't know, but I think if you call the numbers at the bottom of page two here: http://www.toronto.ca/forms/pdf/cns_ph_petid.pdf they might help you.

Hey, I was looking at that and a license for an unaltered dog is $60 and for altered is $25. It would SO rock if they would do that here. I know in some municipalities they do, but in Montreal and Laval, they don't. We should all protest. ;)

Can I post a dream cat - Joey isnt always good with dogs but he loves cats - he has never once growled at one or chased one - and will let them come right up to him and just wag is tail with glee. The cat at the corner has been coming over to visit Joey and the romp around the back yard together - sometimes he is even at our back door waiting for Joey. :D Hubby says when we move - he may let us have a cat :fingerscr

Idont want to contribute to "breeding" at all. BYB's, ethical, none of it.

Sometimes the easiest way to adopt a dog that is at a rescue farther away is if you have support from a local rescue who is willing to take full responsibilty for the dog and who is willing to vouch for you as being a responsible dog owner.

For example Maya was in an adoption group in Florida, a group local to me offered to help me out, they interviewed me did the required homecheck and they were willing to take responsibility for Maya should the adoption fail for any reason in her life time.

The main reason many rescues refuse to adopt out long distance is over the concern what will happen to the dog if placement does not work out or if the adopter ends up ill and no longer can care for the dog because of distance most people would be reluctant to transport the dog back to the originating group which could put the dog in jeopardy of ending up in a shelter or pound.

Most here have express a desire to help save a life, but adopting only helps to save "ONE" dog , which is great but often that is plan for down the road for a bit, but lives can be saved right now without having to adopt

Some people may have felt offended at the thought of me purchasing a pup rather than taking in another rescue.

Here is the way I look at it, I have 2 rescues both with health problems, so I know their health costs a going to eating up some of my finances, and if I had adopted/resues another even though it looked healthy and found it also had major health issues, it would then detract me from doing work both in time and in costs from helping rescues locally and internationally, so my decision was to obtain a dog that was well bred and guaranteed healthy so I will be able to continue contributing to help rescues.

Lets say I ending up getting a rescued chinese crested and I found it had Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease and needed surgery to the tune of roughly $6000.

That $6000 would have been better spent buying fabric to make coats for foster dogs and for selling with a percentage going to a rescue, or buying items to auction off, donating products I make as fundraiser to help pay for needed surgeries or unexpectd health care expenses for foster dogs So by choosing a healthy well bred dog I can be guaranteed I will still be able to help dozens of adoptable dogs not just one.

If you really want to make an impact on helping to save animals lives then volunteer to help rescues and shelters. Fostering is one way of help but not the only way. Rescues operate on a non profit basis and no one gets paid for the work they do, so without volunteers they would cease to exist, and many groups really do not have enough volunteers and the reason so many volunteers burnout because they have their hand full with more than they can handle or they ended up a few consecutive dogs with serious help problems that tied there foster homes for lengthy periods so they can bring in new dogs or leaves them in serious financial difficulties and therefore unable to continue their work. The more volunteers and aid they have the more dogs they can save. And everyone here who has expressed a desire to help save a life can do so even if you can't adopt a dog right now

For example most rescues need blanket and towels for their dogs. You can go out and collected used unwanted blanket and towels from friend and neighbours and deliver to the group, if you and your friends have collars and leashes you no longer need donate them, how about spending $50 on a couple bags of cheaper dog food, dog shampoo , detergerents, grooming supplies, old crates, old clean dog dishes and donate them, as far as food goes it may not be want you would feed your own dogs but for a rescue it can mean 2 extra dogs will get food for a month and allow them to spend to money that would have went to food on vetting instead. Volunteer to transport dogs for the group whether to help get them to new owners or to pick up dog from people that no longer want them or simply to take an animal to its vet visits or to adopt events. Offer to do ocassional dog sitting, many foster parents burn out taking one dog in after another, giving them a couple of days breaks here and there can help to recharge them or allows them to deal with family emergencies
You can connect with a group and offer dog sitting services at a reduced fee to owners who adopt from the group, some people are more willing to adopt who might otherwise not because they enjoy going for a one or 2 weeks down south and would not feel comfortable putting their dog in a kennel when they are away so they refrain from adopting, but if they know their adopted dog can be care for in a home setting instead that can be an incentive for them to adopt, When I could not foster I used to help out doing dog washes and grooming , groups need volunteers to meet with applicants and do home visits, Groups require volunteers to sit on their board of directors and fill in for their committee positions, you can do fundraisers such as garage sales, auctions etc to help raise for a group, many rescues require volunteers to do home visits or volunteers to offer post adoption support, if you have computer skills they may need help with a website or help photographing dogs for websites. Maybe you enjoy doing crafts or making quilts by selling or raffling some items off the cash be donated to a group to medical costs for a dog in need at a rescue.

I am sure if you asked any rescue if they are in need of help every one would say yes

OG- Great Post!

Here is the dog I wanted most and still think about every day as I have her picture pinned to a wall in my office. This is "Pickles", the special needs Pekingese that I asked you all about a few months back. She drags her hind legs and while I was doing research on wheel chairs and on her specific ailments to make sure I'd be able to care for her properly, someone adopted her out from under me. I was devastated. I really felt a connection to her and have been unable to feel that same connection with any other dog that I have looked at on Petfinder. Anyway, here's my darling Pickles...

All of them especially the seniors. I have been thinking about this girl plus another one that I can't find that had to have a leg amputated and is older than she is. It makes me really sad that I can't rescue a dog as of yet, but when the time comes it will be a senior and more than likely one that has some sort of medical problem that makes them get over looked, hey as long as he or she won't eat my cat's they would be welcome.
