I am only starting to understand things about dog food ingredients (Thanks to all the info here)

So I was wondering about these ingredients. Just as an example...the good and the bad.

Not great IMO. The rice is ok, it would be better if it was brown rice. Corn is just a filler, and further down they have corn gluten meal which is a sneaky way of listing ingredients so that it looks like there's less corn in it than there actually is. I'd like to know what source the natural flavors come from and what is the source of the fish meal. Menadione is also bad, but I can't remember why, there was a thread posted about it a while back. Anyway, just my 2 cents.

The bad

Ground Corn
Poultry Fat (assume its chicken?)
Corn Gluten Meal
Fish Meal (what kinda fish?)
Menadione Sodium Bisulphite (Source of vitamin K)

Thanks for your thoughts.
I picked this one by random, just to compare what is good and what is bad about it. I figured that by using this as an example, I will be able to learn more about good choices for dog food.

take away all corn products and artificial Vitamin K, and identify the "mystery ingredients" and it's not a bad product at all! even better if the ingredients are certified "human grade"... not all chicken and rice is created equal... :)

I thought that it wasn't tooo bad. I mean no dry food is perfect. I know it has issues, but overall I thought, gee this looks kinda ok...

Chicken
Chicken Meal
Rice What kind of rice? Why aren't they saying?
Ground Corn Bad
Ground Barley
Poultry Fat (chicken & turkey) preserved with mixed tocopherols - a source of Vitamin E -- Phew, they saved themselves- "poultry" alone is very bad- could be any bird...
Corn Gluten Meal -This makes corn likely to be the first ingredient on the list. When they break an ingredient apart, it's because they don't want it to be as high as it really is on the ingredient list (usually it ends up before the meat)
Dried Whole Egg good
Natural Flavours What? Where are the flavors coming from?
Fish Meal What kind of fish? Minnows? Salmon? Big difference.
Flaxseed Good
Yeast Culture Useless, IMO, especially since so many dogs' yeast is not in balance already (too much yeast is a bad thing)
Salt Why?
Potassium Chloride
Dicalcium Phosphate
Choline Chloride
Zinc Oxide
Vitamin Supplements (A,D,E)
Ferrous Sulphate
Zinc Proteinate
Thiamine Mononitrate
Calcium Iodate
Pyridoxine Hydrochloride
Calcium Pantothenate
Copper Sulphate
Riboflavin
Niacin
Vitamin B12
Biotin
Sodium Selenite
Menadione Sodium Bisulphite (Source of vitamin K) bad
Manganese Oxide
Folic Acid
Cobalt Carbonate

Overall, I'd pass. Corn is #1 probably, and dogs only digest 54% of corn. So you're paying for poop.
