Today on my adventures of meter reading I came across a mother and her 5ish year old son walking down the street with the strangest pet.... A racoon.
I had to stop her and ask about this chubby guy.
I thought that perhaps he was an orphan that they had taken in and nursed and now cannot part with but I was wrong....

Turns out that this particular Coon just hangs around their house and adores her son. Its not a pet ( well wasnt supposed to be)
She told me about him hanging around at first and their son was petting him when they would go out to play 2 years ago ( when the coon was younger) the parents were understandably concerned bout this so they called their vet and asked a bunch of q's bout raccoons.
Now "kitty" ( thats his name :D ) gets regular visits at the vet and gets vaccinated ( for safety reasons) has his own home in the heated garage ( where apparently he gets into LOTS of mischeif) food bowls and..... a leash, for their walks!

Its kinda strange to me, but so cute at the same time.
I wish i would have been closer to the truck cause my camera and cell phone were in there:frustrated: i really would have liked to take a pic!

Very cute. Most of the time I don't agree with making wild animals pets, but at the same time, when a bond forms like that, it's really amazing.

Many years ago a friend of ours befriended a young raccoon....it was really cute and totally surprised me cuz they're usually not very friendly.

I love raccoons. They seem pretty aggressive in the wild, but I've known several people over the years that had them as pets, and they were always extremely friendly. The only problem I recall that everyone had with them is that they're really smart and would often figure out how to get into things they weren't supposed to.

We've got raccoons around here--they seem to be bringing hookworm, which apparently is a big problem with raccoons. We've treated the dogs twice now...and probably will have to do that every year. :frustrated:

They are cute, though--I came home one day a month or so ago to find 4 raccoon kits hanging off one of the bird feeders outside the fence. :)

You can come get the 30-pounder around here that keeps chasing people into their houses... Absolutely no respect for personal property, either! And of course can't read NO TRESPASSING signs... Half-tame already...a real bargain! :D

I had 2 babies here around May. A friend was cutting down trees and accidentally killed their mommy. :(

I was planning on raising them and releasing them.. but they wouldn't take the bottle and I don't have experience with tube/force feeding. So I took them to a local wildlife rehabber. I had sucessfully raised and released one other raccoon, but he was tiny and easy to get to take the bottle.

I took tons of pics though... here's a few.
