VANCOUVER -- Police and conservation officers are hunting a black bear in Port Moody that mauled a woman who got between the bear and her cubs.

Staff Sgt. Phil Reid said the incident began just before midnight on Saturday when 57-year-old Jan Lanz let her dog out into her front yard. "The mother bear was in the yard rummaging through rubbish and was immediately confronted by the dog," Reid said.

The dog, an Irish setter/pit bull cross named Nabob, then ran into nearby bush where it found two bear cubs hiding and began to attack them. With the dog getting the worst of the fight, Lanz went outside to see what all the barking was about -- and unknowingly put herself between the cubs and the angry mother bear.

It took hold of Lanz and bit her on the leg.

"It was holding on to my thigh and I instinctively wanted it to let go because it was hurting," Lanz told Global News. "It was trying to get to its cubs."

Lanz managed to hit the bear on the head, stunning it enough to let her go. A neighbour then was able to scare the bears away.

Yesterday, Lanz was at home with heavy bandaging on her leg, covering four large puncture wounds.

Nabob was also injured in the attack and was treated for a cut tail, nose and ears.

According to neighbours, there are often bears wandering in their community, which borders wilderness.

Why the heck do they need to hunt this bear down??

She was only doing what was natural!! Protecting her young!!

And Why did this person have "rubbish" in her yard. when she knows full well there are bears in the area!!??

This could have been completely preventable, but know unfortunately this mother bear and her cubs will pay the price for humans stupidity, with their lives:sad:

According to the CTV news last night, they are not going to hunt the bear down, because she was just protecting her cubs. Hopefully that's the accurate report.

happycats - No kidding on the garbage issue - Port Moody is full o' bears.

Human stupidity has caused the death of other bears too. The human I am talking about was Timothy Treadwell. Not only the life of a bear was lost but also Timothy's an his companions.

The bear was only protecting her cubs, and anyone who has lived in the country knows that you do NOT get between a bear and her cubs. What was that woman thinking anyway, let the dogs takecare of their own fights, they do a better job than humans could ever do.
