Hi to All!
I have just been reading some of the posts and find it very interesting and I'm sure to learn a lot. I have a 7 year old female Shiba Inu her name is Brandy and she is a Treasure. about 2 months ago I noticed that the skin on her stomach was turning black and spreading, I bathed her to make sure it wasn't dirt and her tits were swollen I began giving her Brewers Yeast daily and her condition is clearing up back to having pink skin. I was talking to a lady that worked in a pet store and she said the same thing was happening to her dog (a different breed) so she was going to try the Brewers Yeast. Can anyone tell me what may have caused this. I am finding she is more peppy, not that she ever showed any signs of discomfort. Thank You

Welcome to the forum and we'd love to see pics of Brandy. Have you taken her to the vet for a diagnosis?

take her to the vet immediately and watch for growth of the patch, change in colour, or odor.also monitor for behavioural changes.... I do not mean to scare you but several years ago I had a dog that started getting a sm black hairless patch under her arm, we gave her some creams and special baths but the patch kept growing.... eventually she had to be put down b/c it was causing her skin to rot, her muscles to deteriorate, and evetually caused her significant pain. we never did find out the exact cause of this (although we think it was through exposure to toxins in the river that the city tried to cover up)and the vet was stummped.(it wasnt just strep caused flesh eating disease) So please monitor carefully, it may be more serious than you think (My dog had severe odor with hers when it wasnt cleaned)

Was it in a bare skin area, kind of bumpy? Could be blackheads

Thank you for your replies. Brandy's skin was not bumpy at all, and is clearing up nicely. I am wondering if maybe she had some bruising because I've noticed lately she is leary of going down stairs. I am ashamed to say that I haven't taken her to the vets yet. We have just moved and I am looking for a good one. The last vet we had, should never have become a vet because he had no patience at all. Brandy would be nervous all the time she was with him and it made he made me feel uncomfortable, our pets mean just as much as our children and we want the best.

I've read on other Shiba groups where the belly has turned black, it was due to allergies. Something to consider, maybe?

Nice to see a fellow Ontarion on the board! :)
