give a squirrel a good thought

On my way to work today I came upon a squirrel that someone just ran over. I hate days like this. :( :yuck:
As usual, I got out of the car because I hate to see a poor little critter end his days that way. I usually bring them to my yrad and bury them under my vines. Anyway as I approached the squirrel I saw that he was curled up like a sleeping kitty;then |I saw he was breathing. Crap!!!!! So I called work told them I would be late and started out looking for a open vet clinic....NADA> Double Crap!!!!!! SO I went home and called our nieghbourhood Squirrel LAdy and asked and begged if she could take a look at him and see what she could do....so to make a long story short...Please give out some good vibes and hope this little creature survives this ordeal.....and hopefully the idiot who hit and ran has a bad day....
 for the little squirrel
Sorry I just had to get it off my chest.

Does anyone who lives in Montreal especially in the west island who knows of a vet who would look at a squirrel. He's still alive but I think i really need to have him looked at...thanks

You can try the Hudson Vet Hospital on Harwood. 450-458-5382. They are very kind.

cpietra you're an angel for this little guy. for his recovery and bless you. I would probably pass a dead squirrel on the road (well not probably) but this guy is lucky you did not and you were his angel.

Just to lighten this a bit, and not to make light of the poor little guy (hope he recovers fully), it reminded me of a joke. A man is trying to cross the road and just as he gets to the middle of the road a car comes around the bend. The man jumps to one side and the car swerves the same way. The man jumps the other way and the car swerves that way. The man stops in the middle of the road and looks at the car. He see's through the window that there is a squirrel driving! The squirrel rolls down the window and says "Not as easy as it looks is it!"

Bless you cpietra for your efforts. Let us know how the little guy does and give him a nice peanut for me when he recovers.

Thanks for the info guys and the joke,DogDancer....cute:D The little guy is bleeding from the ear but is still hanging on. I just got a call from another lady who deals with squirrel traumas....I don't think bleeding from the ear is a good thing, but I am hoping on a miracle...he sure seems to be holding his own. I told them that if he can not recover to put him to sleep...no reason to let the suffering go on. :( I'll keep you posted.

I don't know if this little guy will survive. I can't find anyone in this city who would look at a squirrel. I talked to 2 squirrel ladies, one bird lady, one guinea pig lady, and no one can tell what I can give this little guy to ease some pain. I am just assuming there is pain, since he was hit by a car. The bird lady can administer some pain killer drug and antibiotics..but no on knows how much. I don't want to play doctor, but I just want HEL....:yell: THIS IS SO ANNOYING!!!!!

You would think that the squirrel ladies would know. :frustrated:

cpietra16
September 14th, 2006, 03:27 PM
No, They look after babies that have been abandoned, and squirrels that are hurt are just hydrated and kept warm and they hope for the best...I don't know if I could do that. There has got to be vets out there that know about a squirrel anatomy. I told tem that I would be able to pay something for this, but they said that it would be a waste of money....it's very frustrating. I just want to ease this little guys pain...

did you call the vet I suggested. A squirel is very much like a rat, so call.....

rainbow
September 14th, 2006, 03:33 PM
So, if the bird lady is willing to do the job of the squirrel ladies won't the squirrel ladies at least tell you how much pain killer and antibiotics to give? :frustrated: Or, maybe your vet would. :fingerscr

poor thing. i would just bring it to a vet and ask for the kindest treatment for its condition.. euthanasia. he got hit by a car, is likely suffering from internal trauma (bleeding from the ear is very bad), must be in pain, but think IF he does survive... winter is around the corner. can he be brought back to his family, where his food is stashed, where he can eat enough to be strong to last the winter? i doubt it... he might end up starving and die cold and alone anyways... :candle: poor thing. i hope he just falls asleep and crosses the bridge peacefully.

CPietra,as usual you are an absolute angel.
Squirrrels are tough little guys,I've had squirrels with all kinds of wounds, lost leg, lost tail who have survived and still come for peanuts, but bleeding out of his ear is not a good sign:sad:
My FiFi,whom I had for 5 yrs, also eventually got hit by a car and I was relieved through my tears,it was an instant death.
It's frustrating that noone can help and in the meantime this little guy is suffering,I hope a vet is willing to take a look or at least humanely euthanize him or that a miracle will happen and he'll get better with your loving care:fingerscr
Here's a pic of my FiFi,I really loved this little girl:love:

I tried and called all the vets mentioned and noone wants to take in the squirrel...I want someone to euthanize it if the case warrants it....but I can't get anyone... The lady has it and apparently she is one of the best, so I am hoping she will have the connection or the means to put him out of his misery:(

Cpietra, you certainly did everything you possibly could to help the poor little squirrel.

It's so frustrating :frustrated: that the spca, humane society or a veterinarian (whom you were even wiiling to pay) would not have the compassion to euthanize the squirrel. I mean, all of these people are supposed to love animals

I really hope the poor little squirrel is out of his misery by now. :candle: :rip:

I also hope the creep that hit him has a really bad day.

This is kind of an unfair thing to say.... I have non intentionally ran over several squirrels in my time driving. Icould add to the list of small animals I have accidently hit.
I dont know about all of you but, Im not willing to possibly total my vehicle to avoid a small animal. Im sorry if you think im cruel for saying it, or not driving off the road to avoid each instance. Some times they kinda just dart out at you at the last second you know.

Any way im gonna drop that topic now. Luckily a kind hearted person stopped to help this one. cpietra16 you truely are an

erykah, I agree with you. I hit a deer on a highway;but I was going 110 and stopping would have caused more than one death, but when you are driving ona residential street where no one goes over 20, than there is no excuse not to stop...I don't know if the person did not see it, but when I hit something I always stop close by and make sure it's dead or alive....and move it out of the way...especially in a residential area

I know that most of them are totally unavoidable but I think if someone runs over something they should at least stop and remove it from the road and bury it if at all possible. If it's injured they should assume responsibilty and take it to the nearest vet. If it's a large animal (wildlife) then they should stop at the nearest phone and report it.

As for running over animals,I've never hit anything in all our travels and hope I never will:fingerscr
I am sure at times it's unavoidable, especially at night, but you owe it to the victim to not leave it suffering on the road.
The squirrels in my neighborhood cross on the overhead wires,so fortunately I don't see many dead squirrels...but we've had cats, rabbits and raccoons:sad:
Also, some people think of Squirrels as vermins and even try to run them over!!

Update: The little squirrel is still alive and eating but can't stand up, so I will take him to the vets and get him euthanizd:sad: . If I didn't hav any cats i would keep him as a pet and get my engineering friend to build me one of those whel chairs that you se some dogs use, but I don't think that woud be fair to the little guy either...he sure is a figher though.
I still haven't found a vet that would take a look and at least tell me if this is permanent damage or temporary....I know I'm grasping at straws to keep him alive, becasue if i do put him down there will always be a what if....:yell: WHat to Do,what To do?????

i say... give the poor creature peace. squirrels are wild animals, they are not meant to be domesticated and live in the house (although i'm sure there are exceptions!). Fate chose this to happen, the only responsibility you have in all of this is to give the little guy some love before he crosses the bridge: "i'm sorry this happened but not all humans suck" :o Think of his chances of surviving the winter, food shortage, predators, etc. Let the baby go. :candle:

Maya, I forgot about Finnigan, but my poor little injured "Finnigan" does not seem to be able to walk so that may indicate nerve damage...or...I don't know. But since I haven't been able to find a vet who would see him, I will have to think the worse and just euthanize him...If I wanted a miracle, this would be a good time. I just don't know if he's in pain, all I can assume is that he is, and I don't want to see him like that...:(

This is so difficult, I really feel for you cpietra16.:grouphug: I can't believe you've had such little support trying to help this little guy. I mean don't people take other rodents to the vet, why is it so different with a squirrel, don't they want your money? At least here there is a wild animal shelter that would have taken him right away and decided what to do. They don't do a lot of rehab but they at least can tell if they will have a chance, or if they should be euthanized right away. Good luck, you are really a saint for trying to help.

CPietra,my husband always tells me"Why do you notice all these things?"
when he might not have noticed a bird that cannot fly or another wounded or stray animal.
I am definetly not religous, but I think it's meant to be,just as you were the only one to help this little squirrel,we who care, are somhow made to find these creatures and help them.
Our HS would help me end a squirrels suffering,I don't understand why yours would not:confused:
What do they expect?for you to kill him?
Without his legs functioning,he'll never survive out there:sad:
Another little squirrel I had,who was quiet tame, only had 3 legs and she had babies 3 times and was fine with 3 legs.
But if this one cannot use his legs at all,he's doomed:sad:
I cannot believe there is nobody willing to help, even if it is a wild animal,it's an animal in need:sad:

Update...The little squirrel past away at 7"15 tonight. I spoke to 2 docotrs over the phone and described everything and the Bird Lady also spoke to a friend who was a neurologist and they all agreed that he may have brain damage and may not regain the use of his eye...so I had him euthanized...I held him and made sure his good eye was to the sky so that he could hear the birds and see the blue sky...he was squeeking which I was told he was in pain...which ofcourse means I let him stay in pain over night....very selfish, but I didn't know better. anyway he's over the bridge and eating his nuts...:rip:

I read this post and cried.....to think someone took the time and energy to help a little squirrel......these are the kinds of things I do (with much effort because watching an injured animal brings tears to my eyes and I end up a useless bawling pile of mess....) But anyway, I have to believe that there are no coincidences in life, that we are brought together with other people, creatures and experiences for reasons we may not understand. To teach us something I suppose? Maybe to teach others something.......

Good Day,

One of my cats brought home a baby squirrel this morning (unharmed) she walked in the house through her kitty door, put the baby squirrel down beside me and walked away. We are presently giving him Gatorade through a syringe. His eyes are still closed and he has no fur (must be quite young!!)

I see that someone from Pointe-Claire posted that they have a "squirrel lady" in their area ?!?! Is there anyway I can get in contact with this lady to see if she can help?

Please email me as soon as possible at jackyarsenault@gmail.com
