Dog tags

does anyone have a clever, creative & practical way to quickly move a set of dog tags from one collar to another? each dog has two tags on a "keychain ring", which is a pain in the butt to thread onto the collar's metal ring. it's too much trouble & time to undo all of this to put the tags on another collar just for an evening walk, so when they wear their fancy leather collars, there are no tags and that scares me: what if something happens?... you know?

i tried one of those "mountain climber" clips but they get bent and opened when the dogs play. help!

How about a locking carabiner? http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/66/Screwgate_pear_carabiner.saa.jpeg

MEC or la cordee would have a vast selection of pro ones...

what is MEC?....

1-MEC or online climbing stores
2- You can them as small as 1" across, but the smaller they are, the harder they are to find, and the smaller they are, the weaker they are. This one might be a good compromise: Because it's super strong (http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444250 3777&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302690751&bmUID=1158196378251) (enough to climb with)
3-NP

Another option might be these so that you can click one half to the collars and one half to the tags (http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444223 7715&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302697507&bmUID=1158196568663)

thanks guys - i think i'll go visit La Cordee, it's not too far from here... Marché Central scares me, LOL! i really need something very small and solid, that will not tear, rip, bend, dangle, get caught in dog teeth and fur... See why i'm at my wit's end trying to find something? :yell:

Really?! Marche Centrale ROCKS! There's Costco, Reno, MEC AND Krispy Kreme! All in one place! I used to live right there and that's the only thing I miss.:D

oh i know! it's driving up there, the traffic, the huuugeness of parking & getting into the stores... i've never had a krispy kreme donut, and i figure if i stay away... i'm good... LOL! but if i lived closer, yeah i'd be there all the time probably. eeeeeeeee!

Another suggestion.... what about those other key ring things ( the ones that there is a loop on either end and you press in to disconnect the 2 of them) *Ill try to find a pic, cause i couldnt even tell you what im trying to say there*:D

They hang about an inch or so. But seem sturdy enough!

Prin
September 13th, 2006, 10:10 PM
Oh I know what you mean. They're two rings connected by a little metal bar that can be unsnapped in the middle... Right?

Yes!!!:D
Thank you Prin!! You always seem to figure out all these "riddles":highfive:

For dog tags I used these links

http://www.cdwplus.com/quicklinkspage.html

http://www.cdwplus.com/photos/qlsize.gif

The diameter is small enough to put the tag directly on, I don't like using split rings as the wire ends can get snagged on carpet, they are not heavy duty but I don't feel heavy duty is necessary just to hold tags, on martingale collars I never attach the tags to the d-ring, I put the tags on one of the slider loops instead so if the tag does get caught on something the collar will not tighten.

technodoll
September 13th, 2006, 10:36 PM
erykah, that design would not work... still stuck with having to use split rings... which is what i'm trying to avoid, LOL!

OG, that looks about right. simple, solid, safe and effective. I too have the same arrangement with the martingale collars. so i guess a trip to La Cordée is in order this weekend!

THANK YOU EVERYONE!! :)

No, techno, you buy two of erykah's things for each dog and just move half of it back and forth with the clippy thing.:)
(by clippy, I mean the joiner thing... You know, because it breaks in half at the midpoint?)

technodoll
September 13th, 2006, 11:00 PM
it just doesn't look solid enough... if you saw my dog's tags, all bent and twisted and pockmarked by teeth, you'd understand what i mean, LOL! :o

Prin
September 13th, 2006, 11:02 PM
Then I'd get the real rock climbing ones from MEC or la Cordee. They're really stronger than the 'decoration' ones.:)

I would trust the material one I posted before I would trust this one. Yeah the metal is strong, but the connection isn't. The material one with a clip would be stronger, and if they are too long, they would be easy to make ao that there is no extending material, and less than 2"

I bought something in Plattsburgh at Petco. I will try and see if they sell it online. It is a like a mini collar with a tag hoop. The tags stay on permanently but the mini collar can be unhooked and moved from collar to collar. It is great for those of us who like to decorate our dogs from season to season. It was $3.00.

I couldn't find it at Petco but you can order online on this site;

copperbelle that is interesting. how "low" does it hang though, from the dog's collar, once the tags are on? looks like it would be about 3"? ...

coppperbelle
September 14th, 2006, 10:27 PM
It is no longer than it would with a regular O ring. I find that clanging of tags isn't as bad either.

Oh, you're awesome! :) I too hate having to deal with the little O-rings when switching collars. I've been looking for something like this, especially since I ordered that new leather collar for Petey that I won't want him to wear to the dog park.
I just ordered the little black one from amazon. The shipping was more than the clip itself, lol! Shipping was $5, so came to about $8 all together.
Thank you!!!!!!

You might try Home Depot (or something similar) in the section where the have the chain they sell something similar to a D-ring that screws closed. they come in several different sizes and they are pretty heavy duty. I had a dog who knew how to unclip herself from your standard tether clip and I used one of those links for her. She was 85 lbs and it stood up to her pulling against it. Good luck! (you can always get duplicates made of the tags and put one on each collar, I know people who have done that too.)

That's sort of what we do. I have Charley's microchip tag on a his harness, my name and phone number the other harness and his City and rabies tags on his collar.
Even though he is always in his collar, I like knowing the harnesses also have tags just in case.

Yep, I too have two ID tags for Petey, but I can only get one city license tag and one rabies tag and I would not want him to be lost without those. I suppose the ID tag is the most important and he is microchipped as well, but I'm just REALLY paranoid, LOL! Petey uses at least two different collars for outings (depending where we're going and how dirty he'll get!) and I want him to have all his tags on him at all times. :)

I don't know about your city tags obviously, but you may check with your vet, I have gotten duplicate rabies tags before.
