We went to the Buffalo Zoo today. It was super quiet and the animals were all out. Its a small zoo, but you can get pretty close to the animals which is a big change from the Toronto zoo. I got some great shots with the new camera. Enjoy :)

The big guy after the polar is the grizzly. He was hilarious to watch. He was not enjoying being up in the morning.

We were there at about 10am, so alot of the animals were being fed. They were up, out and active. It was a nice change from the Toronto Zoo. That and we didnt have to walk 15kms to each animal lol.

Great pics... odd we lived down that way for a long time but never went to the zoo in toronto or buffalo. I think I'm not well equipped mentally to see them penned up although I am fascinated by all the animals. I went to Sea World in San Diego and found it more open and well equipped for the animals, wasn't sad leaving there. Sorry, maybe a bit :offtopic:

It was sad seeing them, because some were obviously depressed. Seeing them was great, but knowing just how bored they were tugged at the heartstrings.

I confess that zoos make me sad, except maybe for some of the smaller, more social animals. An elephant or a tiger in captivity just breaks my heart.
Great pictures, though. I love the little marmoset. Thanks.

Has anyone ever read Gerald Durrell, who collected animals for zoos decades ago and then set up a zoo of his own on Jersey in the Channel Islands (and it's still there, if you're headed that way)? Beginning with 'My Family and Other Animals', there is a whole string of books. He has an amazing wit, you won't stop laughing, I promise, about lemurs who pee on his head or iguanas under the bed. And his interactions with the locals (who would trap and bring him many specimens, since they were accustomed to hunting them for food). Highly recommended, especially for animal-loving young adolescents.

Check out this site:

They took in an elephant from Vancouver after months of hassling with the 'experts'. She died soon after, it was too late. Here's her story:

Sorry to hijack. I'll stop now.

Ya I think that's the one I was wondering about, I called it a 'bear'?

It looks to me like a spectacled bear.
