It depends if the yorkie has had a haircut. Mine was black and tan until I had her first cut. Now she's silver and blond. You're talking color right? The coat itself should be soft, shiny, and wavy.

Here's a pic of Audrie's summer "do"

Not to take anything away from Audrie, but a show quality yorkie should have a black and tan colouring, with fine, glossy and straight hair.
Because of the popularity of the breed, some dogs vary from the breed standard due to bad breeding. A puppy cut looks nice all the time, a show coat takes forever to maintain, especially if they have the required 'fine' hair because it knots when it gets wet.

Here's my father in laws yorkie. He was bought as a pet quality pup from a breeder who used to show. I've had him looked at by professional dog handlers just for the sake of knowing and their comments were that his fur was black, not blue, and red, not tan, the grey on the top of his head was bad, and over all his fur wasn't fine enough. As far as build goes he's great though, and he has the right temperament. He isn't going to be shown or bred, so it didn't really matter, I was just curious. He fulfill his role as being the best bud ever to my father in law and that's all we really wanted.

thanks for the replies. mocha's coat is straight & silky, I had his hair cut just around the face and I thought his body hair should be really long by now.aw heck he's gorgeous anyhow. I'll post a picture if I can figure out how.

By the way is it just me or do all yorkies make funny noises . Mocha mummers & mutters a lot.

I dunno, unless you're trying to train the Yorkie's hair to curl in a certain direction?

And how does this belong in training talk?

;)

I'm not sure how big your dog is but Little Buddy isn't very big, so the long hair helps give him some substance...
