Anyone have a guess on our new puppies breed?

We adopted a 7 week old puppy from a shelter last week. The shelter guessed that he was a chihuahua/basenji mix. I doubt the basenji part, because he doesn't have any characteristics of a basenji. They said this breed because of his markings. His face doesn't look like a chi either, but it could be possible since he is so small. He kind of resembles a jack Russell terrier to me. His fur is soft and fluffy. It is getting longer so his coat will probably be medium length. My guess is a jack Russell mixed with a longer haired breed, but who knows? Anyone ever seen a puppy like this or have a guess?

Hard to tell, he's so young. Give him another 7 weeks or so and it'll start to become apparent what he might be.

CUTE!!!!!!
I see jack in him. You might have to wait to see his grown up body to get some more clues; they change a lot from that roly poly-ness :)
More pics please

I completely agree. Looks like a Jack head and jack mischief in the eyes. But they morph so many times as they grow, you won't know until he's done (and even then you might not have a clue).:o

(oh and the other one- not sure, but he looks like he could be a boxer mixed with cotton. :D)

one look at the little fellah and i'd say "mostly jack russel". i have seen grown ones with quasi-identical markings... and the face, ears, etc... yip! what a cutie!

Very cute. If I had to guess right now, I'd say you were right on the money with a Jack Russell mix. It will be interesting to see how he changes and grows.

Oh My Goodness, he is too cute, but I have to agree with a Jack Russell x . But with that said.... you must be aware that they can grow and grow like my long legged 'old man' (you can see pics of him on general forum 'getting older') I have to laugh because that it what we were told 12.5yrs ago. It is really hard to tell at this age what they are going to turn out looking like, and coming from a shelter they are making a 'best guess' at what he is, good luck many fun times ahead, welcome to the forum:pawprint:

So Cute!! Does he have a name yet? I have no idea what breed he might be. My pup is 12 weeks old, and I still can't tell what she is going to resemble! In time maybe we both will know. or not

Honestly most 7 week old puppies look about the same.
It's likely he'll look NOTHING like he does now.

Walnut now

Coloration is the same, everything else, no, lol.
I use her as an example 'cause she's one of those "What the heck is she going to look like!", She didn't start looking like herself until 3 or 4 months.

Hey MBIE, I totally thought Walnut was bigger until I saw the pic of her in her 'drunk'n state', she's just a wee thing, crazy how pics make them look:offtopic:

She's not huge, but at 53 lbs and growing, she's not tiny, lol.

 Maybe she looks small 'cause she's in front of a 46 inch widescreen tv. Our entertainment stand is pretty big.

I have no idea what the breed could be. I just came into this thread because I was pretty sure there'd be pictures here and I was right !!

Lots of cuteness, new puppy, and Walnut both !!:dog:

I just looked at this thread again and I just love the expression in the first pic. If "cute" is a breed then that's what he is. :D

Thanks for all of your input! I guess it is kinda like when you have a baby, and they leave the hospital looking exactly like you....but in a few months you realize they are the spitting image of your hubby. :)

Anyways, his name is Cutlass...because our last name is Olds. Hence Cutlass Olds instead of Olds Cutlass.

I don't really care what he is because he is SO adorable. Yesterday he started going and waiting by the door to let me know he had to go to the bathroom. I'm such a proud Momma...lol.

I have no idea how the shelter can say he is part basenji from his markings
most have an all reddish colored body with white bib(tux) and blaze of the nose and may white stockings never seen white with red spots.

As others said he may change a bit as he matures

Who would ever think that this baby would be a greyhound, this is at 4 weeks

Wow....your greyhounds are so beautiful!

I totally didn't think he was marked like a basenji either. I saw a pic of a puppy who was a jack russell/sheltie and it looked almost identical to my pup. Guess it is another theory.

How I wish, these are pups from a breeder in Finland her male Loke was the sire of the pups

Your pup is precious! soooo adorable! I agree w/ the others, I don't see the basenji (I have a basenji mix). mine is the reddish w/ white markings. But basenji's also come in brindle and black/white. I don't see it in your pup, but I do see the jack russel! be sure to post pics as your pup grows, you should have a better idea of his mix as he gets older. (or you could post here again, and maybe others will have a better idea) either way, more pics please!

pic of my basenji-x at 8 wks...

That puppy looks exactly like my puppy I got yesterday from Breeders. It's a Jack Russell / Sheltie. I have a female who is extremely attached to me already, and also to my other dog and my two cats. Anyways, yours is adorable!
