Gross question

Can a dog get frost bite on it's anus?

Goldy my oldest had blood on the anus. Fearing the worst, I began to check and see if there was blood inside or on the poop.
It seems to me she has frost bite on her butt. We have had super bad extreme temps. But I never let her out for more then 5 mins?
This morning I cleaned out the anal glands to see if that could be it.
It's like the anus has been burnt or scrapped? Any ideas?
By the way it looks much better. Believe me I would take her to the vets ASAP if there was any other sign or more bleeding.

Well any area that's exposed for long enough can get frost bite

But if you weren't out very long I doubt if that is it. Do you think maybe she sat in something that could have burned her butt or maybe she ate something that burned coming out?

Whats it look like now? Has she had a bowel movement, any discomfort or whining?

Clean the area with a luke warm cloth and pat it dry. If you have some aloe vera from a plant put that on it or some vitamin e from a capsul just break it open. NO creams cause they usually contain fragrance and other chemicals.

The area looks pretty you can tell there has been something happen but no bleeding.
She's gone whining. Has licked it a few times but nothing major?
Another question can it be from food being too dry? Like I'm finding the poop comes out quite dry and hard??? I'm just grasping at straws now aren't I? Just trying to think what can cause this and try to stop it.
Poor Goldy :(

if her poop is dry and hard that is a sign of constipation and low absorbtion of water.

Is she drinkin enuf? and does she only get dry food?

Yea she only eats dry food but i have been watering it down latley.
I'm still thinking along the line that she froze her butt some place but where I'm not sure. It looks great today...Bad when your dogs butt looks good eh? lol! But I wish i knew what happened?

I would keep watering the food down. Don't switch to can as it can be very high in fat, and that coming out won't help her poor little behind.

What breed is Goldy?

Certain breeds that are prone to bloat should NOT have their dry moisened. My guys are one of them.

And canned food is ok.You watch the ingredients.

My guys get both. They are not over weight. They poop just fine.

I have had several vets, and techs tell me not to give canned food. Not that it will make them overweight, but that it causes blocked arteries like humans, as well as other problems with skin and such. I was not aware of any breed not being able to have watered down dry food, so that would certainly be something to check into. What kind are yours so I know in case I ever have one? While the high fat content inthe canned foods will not affect a healthy dogs pooping, it just seems to me like that would irritate the already sore end of her dog.

Goldy (or Odie as i like to call her) is a senior citzen. She will be 11 yrs old. What her breed is?????? Hienz 57...we think Terrier and maybe lab? But she only weighs 35 lbs?

I forgot to add this.....her butt is doing fine now. All healed.....Do you think Seniors should go on canned food. Her teeth are really good. I am convinced she froze her little tush

Hmmmmmm,I never heard of a vet saying not to give canned.

Yukon and Tron have been on both for 7 years. My cat and 5 month old kitten are on can and dry.And my previous dog of 13 years also.Never had any artery problems.Or skin problems.

The reason some dogs have skin problems is because of an alergy to something in the food. This happens with the dry too.Just like how us humans have alergies to certain foods.

amaruq,I clicked on the link, but it said forbidden,i don't have permission. Can you try again.I would love to see a pic of Goldy.

I'm glad to hear her butt is better.:D

You can give her senior canned. But try her on a bit first.

Here is a pic of my guys.:D

1john44...Here is a link to bloat...

Bloat is in deep chested dogs.

My friend lost her St.Bernard to it.

What is the bloat? I am not sure where that came in? Maybe I am just being slow today, certainly not the first or last time that will happen!

Maybe the thing with canned dog food is like smoking. Some people will get lung cancer from it, and others who smoke for 30+ years will have nothing.

The bloat part came in when it was mentioned about watering down the dry food. And that's wy I had to ask amaruq what kind of dog she had.

If you click on the link I left it will tell you what it is.:)

Try my link now should work

February 6th, 2004, 09:09 AM
Okay. Sorry about that, guess all the snow we are having out here sorta froze my brain for a bit. But the link isn't working. It says the website has moved.

February 6th, 2004, 06:30 PM
Okay finally got it to work. I guess that answers why we shouldn't do canned food cause of the fat content, but it also means we shouldn't do dry food moistened.

February 6th, 2004, 09:07 PM
You don't give them canned or dry if the "first" ingredient is "fat".And it also says not to give dry exclusively.Which means it's better to give both canned and dry. That's why we need to read what's in the ingredients.

February 7th, 2004, 01:57 PM
Well, I think I will just stick to what I have been doing so far with the dogs I have now since I haven't had any problems. But I will keep that in mind should any problems arise!

February 12th, 2004, 07:24 PM
I'm thinking I know what happened. I don't think it had anything to do with food.

Did your dog sit down on some ice? You know like a wet tongue on a cold fence poll? Sounds to me like she stuck!!

Glad to hear she's better though!

February 12th, 2004, 09:01 PM
Ouch, don't want to think about it! It hurts just to read it!

February 13th, 2004, 07:57 AM
I am positive it had to do with freezing her little butt on something. She has healed up no problems. So what she froze to is a mystery? But there a little butt print out there somewhere lol!
