hello i have noticed that my spaniel cross has been rolling on his back alot. he does this aleast a few times on each of our walks and he is quite frantic when hes doing it. i thought it was his ears bugging him (he rubs them alot while doing this) but there are no sings of infection, and i dont think he has fleas (he doesnt scratch slot) and he's on advantage. at first i thought he was just playing but he doest look to be enjoying himself while doing, any thoughts?

LOL, your spaniel has joined the ranks of rolling in stinky stuff in the grass. It's instictual and smells yummy to them, even if you can't smell it, or it smells gross to you.

My cocker rolls in the grass when wet, or when something smelly is there..

Like the week she found a dead bird, racoon poop and multitudes of things I couldn't see. She sure wasn't happy with the daily bath that came with it..

Proof you aren't alone, lol

Hi Michelle and http://bestsmileys.com/welcome/10.gifaboard!

You do have to watch the smelly stuff as they tend to want to leave their smell on top but mainly I think it feels really good to roll in the cool grass ... I swear mine purr and slightly growl while doing it. But dead fish or anything really rotten they'll find it including human waste - as gross as this sounds :o

Jemma rolls in things, but not otherwise. Boo rolls in grass in slo-mo, but never in things. I've been trying to get a video of him rolling because it's so funny. He's literally in slow motion.:D

(Q) does your dog only roll on his back in the grass? My old dog:rip: used to do this on the grass at first and like everyone else suggested smelly things were the fav but I noticed she did this when there was nothing there also and then it started on the carpet in the house, no fleas but she did have allergies, just something to think about, no (Q) is silly, well maybe it is;) but what a better place to ask there are so many different members on this forum to offer tons of tips and suggestions ask away, and besides having a dog as a young person and owning one 'yourself' is a totally different ballgame.

My guy also likes bugs, dead or alive, his favorite being earthworms.

I read somewhere that rolling around on their backs can be an absolute sign of contentment as well.. I know that Callie has such a happy look on her face when she rolls in the backyard and on walks (which can get kind of annoying, but she is sooo cute who could resist).
