kitten help

August 6th, 2006, 06:17 AM
Hi all

We had a lovely one year old ginger male until last week when while we were away he was knocked over and killed. The friends who were looking after Charlie thought it would be the best thing to do and got us an 9 week old kitten as a replacement. We have had Shadow for a week now and felt that we needed to get another one, so yesterday we went with Shadow to visit a cat & kitten home and got a little black and white girl. While we were at the home the two kittens had a bit of a play and explored the new surroundings. When we got home, Shadow wasn't happy, she was hissing and growling and the new kitten, she is also chasing her around a lot and generally being unfriendly. Is there any thing I can do to make it easier for them both?

Also Shadow is biting all the time, this has been since day one, can we do anything to try and stop this?

thanks in advance

They'll come around. The male is just doing his territorial thing. Keep the new kitten in a separate room with his stuff for a few days until they get used to each other's scent, maybe do a blanket exchange. Then slowly integrate them for short supervised sessions.
Get them neutered/spayed as soon as possible (some vets will do them quite early). This will help calm them down.
Young cats are bitey. Don't play with him with your bare hands, only with toys. If he does bite you, say NO firmly, and immediately withdraw your attention. Once the kittens are friends, some of that crazy energy will go into playing with each other and your hands will be saved!
Sorry about Charlie :(

Sorry about Charlie.

Badger gave you alot of good advice. Don't worry, your two babies will be best of friends in no time. :D

thanks to you both for your replies. My two little girls seem to be getting on a lot better now, they were washing each other earlier on and even managed to take a nap together!

We got a climbing passion fruit plant delivered today, and we are going to find a nice sunny spot in the garden to plant it and bury Charlies collar under it.

thanks again
