Need help with fishing rod asap (leaving at 6 am!)

I bought a cheap fishing rod ($10) to have a little fun just playing around this weekend while camping.

Only problem is, it is a spinning reel, and I have never used a spinning reel. I have no idea how to set it up (the spinning reel and rod were seperate).

I have searched all over the net and can't find instructions ANYWHERE!

Anyone know how to set these things up?

Are you looking to attach the reel to the rod??

Well, I have it "attached" to the rod (that was the easy part) but the line is not fed through the mechanism. There is an elastic holding the line to the reel, but I have no idea where to feed the line so that I can wind/unwind it!

I haven't used a spinning rod (open kind) in years, if ever (think I may have when I was a kid). I am used to a spin-caster (the enclosed kind). It frusterating because you think there would be instructions I could print SOMEWHERE on the net, but no! Can't find ANY!

ok, bear(sp?) with me here!

holding the rod/reel, flip the wire thing up to loosen the fishing line -and you should be able to feed it thru the loops on the rod ---is this what you are looking to do?? AFter you have pulled the amount of line out you want, flip the wire thing back to the side - this stops the line from reeling out.

I have no idea what you are talking about.

THis is what mine looks like (not as fancy though):

ok see the black arrows anfd the black line i marked on?? That's what you want to flip up to loosen the line and flip back down to stop the line from loosening off. It flips up and back to the side. In this picture, you can't pull the line loose - you must flip it up to release the line.

Hmm...my line is very loose, I can release it without moving that thing. Is that bad? I have an elastic there to keep it from unraveling.

Anyway, I did that, should I flip it back? Now what?

Sounds like it isn't attached to the spinner - which means you may have to take all of the line off of the reel to see if it is knotted at the very beginning. If not (if my memory recalls correctly), you'll have to tie a knot on the reel and wind up all the line again. Kind of like a spool of thread - when you get to the end, it is usually attached to the spool with a knot.

I don't mean that loose, I just mean that because it's a shiney/flexible material, it easily comes off the spool/reel because there is no friction to hold it there. It is firm on the spool though. Just very full.

Have you fed the line up the rod thru the little holes?? You then have to attach your hooks and sinkers etc.

but what do I do with all the line to keep it from getting tangled? As soon as I let the tension go, it gets all wound around the spool and messed up. Isn't there some kind of...something I should be doing to keep it from doing that?

maybe the line is too loose on the "spool" - there isn't enough tension there. It may have to be "re spooled!" Especially if it is bunching up quite a bit!

maybe this website will be helpful??

how tight should it be? Should it be tight enough that it shouldn't unwind by itself at all?

It should give a little, but not enough that the line will loosen up on the spool more than 1 or 2 wraps around the spool

How is the line attached to that little feeder thing? Maybe I am missing a step?

I can't quite recall that part!! I haven't had a fishing rod in my hand for many years!!!
I don't think it's attached though, i THINK you pull the line from the spool and either run it along that thingy or i think you can hold the line in between your 2 fingers(when fishing) - this probably helps with the tension part of it all!@
