I have a 7 month old girl bernese mountain dog. Love her more then anything but cant take that fish smell anymore. Her vet said they do it when they get excited, stressed, nervous etc. She does it often so I was wondering if anyone knows, how much does it cost to remove and if painful and do they need them for any reasons? If anyone knows please let me know. I cant even bring myself to eat fish anymore!!!!! HELP.

From what I've heard about the surgery, which is basically this:
This procedure is complicated by many local nerves controlling fecal continence, the fact that any change in the local musculature of the anal sphincter area can affect fecal continence, and the fact that with chronic anal sac problems anatomy is distorted. Draining tracts can develop after surgery if the gland is not completely removed.
I would look into diet changes before considering removal. Have you talked to your vet about it? What is she currently eating? Have you tried any diet changes?
