undiagnosed choking in 3 year old golden

My dog begins to gag and will choke up mucus. It happens when he is relaxing - lies on his side then he will swallow and begin to breath faster then he will weeze and choke up. He has been to 2 vets. A barium xray and an endoscopy have been done with nothing showing. He eats well, is peppy and happy - but this choking distresses him (he looks very apologetic when it happens). As it happens when he is sleeping the vets have not experienced it. Has anyone else had a dog that does this????????

Mine does it from time to time - it sometimes sounds like a loud SNORT though...and I see her then swallowing hard. She's a big drooler though. I've never been to see a vet. I just figured she was clearing her throat or snorting mucus just like a human would do.

No it is not kennel cough. I just adopted him in June. He was used to eating whatever he saw, and he may have eaten something that damaged his stomach. That is why he had the endoscopy. The mucous on my rugs is a problem!
