Change in eating, due to illness....

January 21st, 2004, 02:40 AM
My girl's beagle puppy is recovering from pneumonia, has been on two different meds over the last two weeks. Of which the puppy is responding. In the last three days, the puppy has begun eating it own feases. Is this a normal reaction, due to illness? Also, she had changed the puppies food, could this be the cause? If possible please address both. Thank you in advance.......Brian

Probably more likely the food change...though honestly there's no real consensus why some pups/dogs do this (it's called coprophagia)...just theories.

Propbably the easiest thing to do for now is just make sure to pick up right away, so she doesn't have a chance to eat it...if it seems to be a habit, you might find this link helpful:

Hope the pupper continues to improve!

Also, when puppies food was changed, was it done gradually? What I mean by that is,was a bit of the new food put in with the old food?

The mistake people make is switching to a new food right away without introducing it to the pup.

When introducing a new food, what should be done is give less of the original food and mix a bit of the new food..Then lessen the original and add more of the new one.Till it's just the new one.

Hope this made sense..:)
