Quebec Puppymill petition

July 13th, 2006, 08:55 PM
I came across this petition today to make puppymills in Quebec illegal,
it has been online for 2 months, it has only 1325 signatures on it, only about a 1/4 maybe 250 of those from Canada :( ,

Quebec has more puppymills than anywhere in North America, for Canadians this should be considered a national disgrace, the Quebec Animal welfare Act is another disgrace, it says these breeders must provide food and water and suitable living condition, no where in the Act is there a definition of "suitable conditions are" so investigators have no power to shut them down as long as they see they have water and are fed something, It is estimated that thre are over 2000 large puppymills in Quebec.

Unless this petition numbers grows at one enormous rate and includes a heck of a lot more Canadian signatures, what politician will look at it and take it seriously, they would look at the number of Canadian signatures as a sign that Canadians really don't care about this issue.

Is this only a Canadian issue??? Sadly no, brokers in the US are buying puppies from Quebec by the truckload, roughly 500 puppies to truck and are shipped around the US to be sold in pet stores

Sign it and pass it on

Thank you OG for bringing this petition to light ... I agree Canadians are the least involved in this kind of abuse. Quebecers on top of the list yet we have over 2,000 puppy mills? Giving up is really just saying mine live a good life - I totally agree, shame on us! You don't need to go yourself to a puppy mill ...which no doubt will peel back your eyelids just please I urge people to take 1 sec and sign this petition then pass it on ... thank you :fingerscr

I have signed this and I think everyone here needs to do this. If people give up this will just become a bigger and bigger issue. Worst of all is all the animals that will be subjected to these conditions. If you own or work in rescue you should be the first people to sign these petitions. Along with every pet owner and non pet owner who cares about animals. If you have never seen a puppy mill than you need to it will really open your eyes to how horrific these places can be. I wish I had the link for the video of a puppymill so you could see one if you never have. You would see the conditions these pups that you buy from the paper or a pet store are born and live in and the disgusting conditions and diseases run rampant which is why you probably had many vet bills to go with your new pup. If they actually live, death in these pups is common.

This site shows pictures of mills and rescued dogs

This site has videos of a mill, it is nicer than most since the dogs are not confined to small wire cages

It is estimated that the Quebec puppymills produces nearly a 1/2 million puppies a year, the average cost of a pup purchased is $700 US which explains why so many exist, many mills actually report it as business and pay taxes as a business so the government also profits, which is why laws are so lenient, and the government is willing to turn a blind eye, as long as the public ignores and does not scream in anger and rage, it will continue.

Another way to make changes happens is letter writing campaigns to federal and provincial ministers.

Please write the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and
Minister Coordinating Rural Affairs and let him know how disgusted we all are about the cruelty against puppies in Quebec.

Here's the link:

I posted this to a couple other dog forums, and one one message group whose aim is to try and end puppymills and bring around animal welfare legislation while checking the group out I found some interesting things

Here is the website for a puppy broker, they have no contact info on their site , it is designed for pet stores owners as advertising to make them think they are getting high quality puppies by dealing with its broker salesmen, the online tour of course is a joke, there are no pictures of inside the building or inside the truck, they simply show a picture of large transport trucks(cab only) this is basically a clean up site and warehouse for puppies they obtain from puppymills, The site is designed to look peachy nice for pet store owners making them think they are dealing with responsible breeders who will offer them high quality puppies and likely they have little brochures for the puppy buyers as well, so as to make them think that their new pet is a good quality animal that did not come from a puppymill

the salesmen visit various pet stores and hand them a business card that contain a link to the site and how to contact them to place an order

this is an auction site much like ebay, but instead designed for auctioning off animals

There has been others in the past, which enough harrassing messages sent to buyers and sellers tended to get put them out of business, I am not suggesting that anyone should do as there "could be" legal ramifications for harassment
