Shih Tzu Labor and delivery?

June 22nd, 2006, 10:09 AM
HI everyone.

Roxie finally went into heat in April!! (over a year apparently she had silent heats) Anyway we are about to have puppies and I was looking for some help.

When Roxie had her last litter she went to stay at the breeders, so I didn't get to be there when the babbies where born. This time she's having the puppies at my house, which is awesome! the breeder went away for the weekend, but her husband will come to help with the delivery when the time comes. I'm just not sure what to look for.

I've been doing a lot of reading and watching my dog, but I"m still kinda confused. How do you know when she's getting ready to have the puppies? We thought she would have had them by now with all of the changes that have been happening to her, but still nothing.

*A week ago today Roxie starting getting milk, she's soo full now that her nipples almost touch the floor when she walks.

* On Saturday the area between her anus and her vulva got very large and puffy.

*She's be 10x's more cuddly since Sunday. As well she sits and stares at me for no reason (she doesn't want food, cuddling, to go out etc)

*since yesterday she's been going thorugh little periods where she sit's and stares, she wont lay down. Her tummy gets a lot of activity (it gets really tense) and then she moves and sits somewhere else. After a little bit it stops and she goes to sleep.

*ON monday she ate like there was no tomorrow and pooped like a million times. Now she wont eat very much. (nothing through the day and maybe a quarter of her evening meal (for 2days)

*And finally yesterday afternoon she started getting discharge. It's clear, kinda gooey and crusty. My aunt (who has helped the breeder deliver puppies many times) said it might be her mucus plug and she should have the puppies soon. Shortly after we noticed the mucus she threw up?

She's still very calm and not showing any of the "classic" signs (ie, digging, panting, shivering etc). She's at day 63 so I'm not overly concerned at this point. But I'm just trying to gauge what's happening to my baby.

I"m sure i"m just over anylizing, but any help you have would be great. What should I be looking for? Is all of this normal?

Have you asked your vet and your mentor for help first?

June 22nd, 2006, 10:20 AM
I have spoken with the breeder, I actually just got off the phone with her. lol. Shes in Thunder Bay at a Dog show, which makes it a little difficult to keep in touch. She said she should have them soon. Just to keep watching her and keep her updated. As the breeder is responsible for any vet costs conserning breeding I have not taken her to the vet. That would be something that if she thought there was consern she would get her husband to come and take us. I'm certian that everything is fine (as is the breeder).

My breeder has delivered many sets of puppies, but she doesn't take note of bodily changes or eating habits (not overly). So it's difficult for her to say "well with in 6days of getting milk the dog has had teh puppies). Don't get me wrong, she's very good at knowing when somethings wrong with her dogs, but if you ask her to tell her how she knows shoe couldn't tell you. She'd just say I know.

I"m just trying to get information. I just want to Make sure I"m looking for the right things.

I'm glad she's being somewhat supportive though. That helps.:) Good luck.

I really hope all goes well with the delivery. Please don't take this the wrong way, as it's not meant as an attack, but so many of us have adopted our dogs AFTER some back yard breeder just bred their dog and sold off the litter to uncaring, and in some cases, abusive homes for profit, so very few of the folks that frequent these boards know about breeding or what to expect (save for some of the rescues that have pregnant dogs who were dumped by a BYB). To echo Prin, good luck.

My Aunt borrowed the camera for graduation, but I"ll take some more to post as they get older. We're glad that everything went well too! I was excited as I was there to help deliver the pups. Everything went off without a hitch. Thankfully all the pups are healthy this time!

"Prin: Very cute cows... What breed are they?"

They are prue bred Shih Tzu's!

"the gang: they are just tooo cute!!!!! do they all have homes to go to? im so happy things went well for the pups and you, are you having your little one fixed? "

I don't know about what will happen to them at this point. The breeder will home them and possibly keep one for show. There is a female that has very nice markings, but we'll need to see how she develops. It's a bit early to tell.

Roxie will not be fixed at this point. I"m pretty sure that the breeder wants to breed her one more time before she gets her fixed. I have Roxie on a breeders contract (co-ownership type thing). The breeder is responsible for anything that has to do with reproduction, I have very little say in when she gets fixed. She uses a bitch for more than three litters, so at the most Roxie has one more set of pups.

Thanks for help and interest. I'll keep you posted

That's what I was waiting for (the pics)! What absolute cuties!!!! If I had those in my house I would never leave the room!

Just curious, has the dam finished or shown at all? Are you under contract with the breeder to breed this dog and pass proceeds/puppies on to her? Just curious as you mentioned a few times that the breeder has had many litters. They are cute, that's for sure.

Where are you located? Looks like my Sophie who just passed away.

To answer some questions.

"doggirl: Just curious, has the dam finished or shown at all? Are you under contract with the breeder to breed this dog and pass proceeds/puppies on to her?"

Roxie was shown as a puppy. I got her at 8months of age after the breeder finished showing her. Normally the breeder would have waited until She had retired and spayed Roxie before homing her. However, the breeder is a friend of the family and ran in to some health problems. I offered to take Roxie and allow her to continue her breeding program when the breeder was well and Roxie was old enough. I work with this breeder often (growing, training caring for her dogs) and the arrangement works well for us. Roxie will probly have one more litter and then she'll be fixed and her ownership transfered to my name.

"Shaykeija: Where are you located? Looks like my Sophie who just passed away."

I"m sorry to hear about the loss of your dog. I know that it is hard to lose a treasured pet. We are in Niagara Falls area in Ontario.
