Sophie is sick

June 6th, 2006, 10:33 PM
Sophie is ill. She started throwing up last night at 9 p.m. Every three hours and refused food and water. Now this is a spayed Shih Tzu that will actually stand up on her front feet to eat, she loves her food so much. I stayed up with her all night and took her to the vet today. No fever, eyes are clear, gum and tongue colour good, alert, not in any pain, peeing and pooping fine. Vet said to feed her light, so am doing the chicken and rice boil, and to limit her water to just enough to wet her whistle. So I give her water with a syringe. She is now on Metronidazole 250mg 1/2 tab 2 x a day, and Metoclopramide 5 mg 1/2 tab 3 x a day. She vomited 5 times since 3 p.m., 2 hours after the Metoclop...and then vomited 1 hour after the Metron..Vet said to keep an eye on her and if anything changes like her poop to get right back in. He was scratching his head because she looks so healthy. Any ideas on this one anybody? Definitely not bloat..She is starting to look a little better tonight. Poor fart puked in my bed so many time last night I had to do 5 loads of laundry today. You gotta love your dog when you go to bed in the dark and sit on a pile of cold barf and not throw a hissy fit.:p And before anyone asks, no she was not exposed to any poisons, chemicals or any garbage. I am so anal about her safety, good thing I don't have kids, they would be in bubble wrap. She never ate anything and when she does for her walks she is always on a lead. I guess this is just a head band against the wall thingy for the time being. But any change and off to the vet she goes.

Could it be just bacterial overgrowth? It's where for some reason, the bad bacteria take over and cause endless diarrhea and vomiting. Boo gets that when he eats chicken (about a week later). He looks great, but he throws up endlessly for hours. I've been told that with the antibiotics, giving acidophilus bacteria helps... (you have to get the refridgerated kind).

I just went through this with Peaches 2 weeks ago, no reason for vomiting but yet, she couldn't keep down even rice. After regular and barium xrays, all that turned up were gas pockets, so the vet put her on metroniadazole, puppy pepcid and a strict bland diet. It took a day or 2 of the antibiotics before she was her usual Peachey self but the vet seemed pretty sure at that point she had a bacterial issue going on, since the barf sample I took also indicated the same. I had no idea they could test that sort of thing, so you may want to take a sample back and have them look at it.

Sophie is getting worse. I talked to her vet tonight and she is going in first thing in the morning for blood and xrays. God I am so freaked out right now. She puked so hard tonight she straightened out and fell over. Yes I called the emergency vet and she said just to monitor her. Should she start to have breathing problems to bring her right in. But on the better side she did attempt to drink on her own tonight. She is not dehydrated but she has not eaten since Monday night. Say a prayer for Sophie...

Sophie had a bad night. But on the up side she stopped vomiting at 3 am. I gave her pedilite(?) and she drank water on her own. She is at the vets right now, they are going to put her on an IV and do all kinds of tests. I am so scared right now for her. I felt so bad when she looked at me with those big brown eyes when I left her at the vets. i guess it is a wait and see time. I don't have a clue what could be wrong with her, she was not exposed to anything that I can think of that would hurt her, and I don't let other dogs go up to her. Missie goes every where with her and they both sniff and examine everything together. Missie is fine. I will post again as soon as I hear from the vet.

Sophie's blood panels came back good. Xray showed nothing. The are going to do a barium xray later today. They are giving her fluids and anti nausa medication. Vet is stumped..I'm in tears and Missie misses Sophie so much she has started to howl.

Just got a call from the vet. Sophie is still the same. Barium is commiing through her and her liver and kidney functions are all fine. No fever no pain. He is talking about doing a scope of her stomache or utra sound. OMG I miss her little face.

Suphie made it through the night. Only vomited once. But her heart is enlarged. I can barely see right now I am crying so hard. We have a decision to make, one I know will destroy me. If all does not go well today I will have to see my beloved Shophie leave for the bridge.

June 9th, 2006, 11:18 AM
I'm sure Sophie will be ok, we're all keeping our :fingerscr and :pawprint: crossed.

June 9th, 2006, 12:36 PM
Sophie went to the bridge at 1:10 pm. She was surrounded with love and died in my arms peacefully. She showed courage and love to all that met her. Her daddy is distraught and Missie has none stopped howling since we got home. Race to the bridge baby...race to the bridge and know you were so loved by your mommy.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's so hard to lose our furbabies. At least she was with you when she went and she left knowing how much she was loved. Take comfort in that. Stay strong and let your memories mend your broken heart.

Well it took 3 tranquilizers and a sleeping pill followed up with a beer to finally knock me out last night. Still woke up crying. Vet said Sophie's heart was really enlarged and when I saw her yesterday she was so weak, my heart broke. I held her on my arms and told her the story of the rainbow bridge. I rocked her and kissed her. I could not believe how fast it was. I think at that point I stated to scream. I woke up this morning to an empty pillow, you see Sophie slept right on my pillow beside my face looking at me. My husband said I cried and called for her all night. I don't remember. Missie keeps looking for Sophie, so do I. All I can see is her eyes, long lashes and that twinkle in her eyes she got before she thoroughly removed what make up I had left on my face.

Sophie is being cremated alone and her ashes will be returned to me. We are not doing very well as the grief still is eating me up. The kennel that I fostered Sophie from and eventually adopted from gave me a little 9 pound Shih Tzu name Tyra. She looks so much like Sophie it is uncanny. It help with the hurting. No I can never replace that little love but with all the grief and howling going on here , I see a glimmer of laughter again. Tyra is 6 years old and weighs a mere 9 pounds, half the size of Sophie. Total Velcro doggie. My vet was great. Most vets make you pay up front when you put you animal to sleep. Ours just told us to come back next week and settle up. As I held Sophie during those last moments, I cannot believe how fast she left this world. Not one sound or sigh, just a jerk and she was gone. I kind of lost it at that moment. I just want to thank you all for your kind words and wishes. Sophie was my world and now it seems a little darker. I am sure when I die she will be one of the first I see at the bridge. I will never forget my little girl.

I have to say I'm glad you have another one. I always felt that the only one who could get a person over the loss of a pet was another one... You know? I depend on my dogs to help me through the huge things and to not depend on them for the biggest losses of all just doesn't make sense to me.:o

Don't forget to post pics when you get a chance.:)

June 12th, 2006, 07:14 AM
Yes,there is a large empty spot in your heart, every time you loose an animal you love.
Tyra will help you,not as a replacement, but as a comfort.
I am sure Sophie would approve, giving a 6 yr old pooch a home is a great way to honour Sophies memory:love:

I barely made the whole post. I had to stop and cry before I could continue on. I am so sorry for you loss. I am sure Tyra will be a comfort:o
