hairballs, or lack thereof

I'm just wondering how frequently a cat should be hacking up a hairball? Our 2 cats are approaching 1 year old and neither of them has ever had a hairball. Is it a problem for cats to not have hairballs occasionally? Maybe they don't groom themselves enough, or maybe they have superior digestive systems:D, able to break down the hair and poop it out instead of hacking it up? Should I be worried that neither of them has EVER had a hair ball?

My two kitties didn't get a hairball until they were almost a year and they lost their baby fuzz and they haven't had another since then. They groom each other, but mine have fairly short hair, and I brush them quite frequently, which I think helps a lot.;)

Both my cats (one's a 2yr. siamese cross and the other's a 3 yr. DLH) very rarely get hairballs. I comb them also but not as often as I should.:o
