Blood in Urine

8 year old Choc Lab has blood in his urine. Starts out bloody then clears up. First noticed yesterday 30 Dec 03.

No blood in stool.

Any ideas????

He may have a urinary tract infection. It is easily cleared up with antibiotics, which you can get from your vet. This is the most common reason for blood in the urine. Your vet will take a look at a urine sample (if you can bring one in, do so, otherwise the vet will have to catheretize him for a sample) and can quickly tell if that's the case. Treatment is quite simple.

It could also be prostate problems, possibly cancer - this can happen with older male dogs. Check his penis and whatever other male parts he has left. :D Often they'll be a bit swollen if it's his prostate, and he may be licking himself more than usual.

Bottom line, only your vet can tell you what's really going on!
