Oxford April 30th, 2006, 10:56 PM Hi I am new here. I have a Jack and she is in heat. I came home from work to find two male dogs in the pen with her. Will she breed with more than one dog? if so what will the results be? The dogs dug under the fence to get in. I don't know a lot about breeding dogs. If anyone has some info that will help I would appreciate it. The problem with this is I had just bread her with another Jack a week before this.
meb999 April 30th, 2006, 11:09 PM hmmmm, I gotta warn you, Oxford that you may not get a very friendly response to your question. This board is VERY pro-spay/neuter. Alot of the members here work in rescue and have to clean up the messes left behind by back-yard breeders. Leaving a female in heat outside won't be regarded as being very responsible. Have you read the rules of the board? If you want to do right by your dog, have her spayed.
mafiaprincess April 30th, 2006, 11:20 PM Yes, your dog can be sired by more than one dog. So you may end up with some jack pups, and some other pups. Were the dogs in your yard larger than your dog? If so they may create pups large enough that whelping them may kill your dog.
If you care about your female you'd spay her to prevent this oops from potentially killing her.
LM1313 April 30th, 2006, 11:35 PM Wow, I would definitely get her spayed to stop the pregnancy. Please--for her sake and the sake of all the animals who need homes already.
Oxford May 1st, 2006, 11:00 PM Sorry, First off I didn't mean to upset anyone. I was on the net looking for some info and this is how I found this site. She is not an inside dog. Although she is a very expensive animal and she is very well taken care of, to the point she thinks she is one of the kids. on the other part of this discussion The other dogs were her size or a little smaller. I love animals and I recently took in two puppies where the owners were going to take them to the pound because they were not purebred.(mixed golden ret. and black lab). Thanks for the info on this subject.
lpn169 May 2nd, 2006, 06:03 PM Jack Russels are not an outdoor breed. Though I do not generally agree with any dog being a primarily outdoor dog.....toy size dogs are not bred for, nor can they tolerate the outdoor conditions year round. Jacks are an indoor breed....period.
To the original question...yes, she can have pups by multiple males, and she should not have been left outside in a pen while in heat anyway....male dogs will to extrordinary things to get to a female in heat.
Have her spayed....and bring her in the house!

Ditto!!! Ditto!!! Ditto!!!!
Oxford May 3rd, 2006, 09:40 AM I don't believe in letting animals in my house. If you don't have animals in your home and you go in to a home where a dog, cat ect. stay it smells. I don't care how well you take care of them or your home. They have a natural sent that gets on everything. That is why my dog has her own home. She has everything we do. Heat, A/C a nice place to sleep and a play yard. so what is the difference? I live in South GA and a lot of people use Jacks for hog hunting. I think it's wrong but, that's why people buy Jacks around this area. My dog has it better than most PEOPLE and she is happy. Enough Said!
Beaglemom May 3rd, 2006, 09:55 AM You will find that most people on the board, myself included, consider our pets as members of our family. For this reason, they are kept indoors and not banned to the backyard as we would never consider putting our children in the backyard all day and night.
If you choose to keep your pets outside and it seems that you are providing what is necessary to keep her comfortable, then please have her spayed! Unaltered males will always find ways to get inside her pen and mate with her. Possibly getting her pregnant at every heat cycle!
Lucky Rescue May 3rd, 2006, 10:26 AM My dog has it better than most PEOPLE and she is happy.
Really? I don't know of any people who are kept in isolation in pens, to be impregnated by every passing stranger, do you? Do you know that dogs are pack animals, and intensely dislike living solitary lives, just as you would?
If you don't have animals in your home and you go in to a home where a dog, cat ect. stay it smells.
That is bunk. I have two cats and a dog who live in my house, and my house does not smell.
If you don't like the smell of animals, do not want them in your home and know nothing about breeding, maybe you stop keeping and breeding animals?
Beaglemom May 3rd, 2006, 10:39 AM Well said Lucky! I agree completely!
Frenchy May 3rd, 2006, 11:33 AM If your dogs smells it's probably because you feed them cheap food. And no,dogs are not meant to live outdoors. Why do you have dogs in the first place?Breed them and make some $$ of them?
meb999 May 3rd, 2006, 12:03 PM :troll: don't feed the troll.....
badger May 3rd, 2006, 12:25 PM Yah think? However over-the-top trolls are, there always enough real ones out there to match 'em.
Breedin' 'em for hog hunters. Nice. Born to get gored?
