Broken toe?

Prin

Anybody know how to tell if you have a broken toe? It's a beautiful day and I don't want to miss it waiting for hours and hours in the ER or in a clinic...

I stubbed my toe three days ago and the first day was excruciating and the second was better (I had a lot of things to do, so I didn't think of it or tried not to) and now, I'm lookin' at the little piggy and he's twice the size of his brothers and he's kinda purpley...

Can they even to anything for a broken toe? I mean, it's the little piggy next to the baby toe- what can they do with that? (please don't say amputate):D

Don't bother going to ER, there is nothing they can do anyway! just band-aid it to the neighbouring toe;) for support. (been there, done that:o )

I stubbed my thumb playing volleyball once, gigantic swelling, half my hand turning purple, similar to your description . . . . but no break. The doc said I came as close to busting it as I possibly could without doing the deed. It took a few weeks to start looking better.

That was about 20 years ago and if the weather is just right, I can still feel it tweaking.

Hope you iced it Prin!

If not ice it and dont bother going to the ER I've broken toes 2 times.

Just use some first aid tape and tape it to the toe next to it to keep it straight. Ice it and it should be fine.

heh heh, I know I should have iced it.. But somehow in the moment, I wasn't thinking straight... If I ice it now, do you think it'll do anything? I mean it's been three days.

It's amazing how much it takes for me to go to a human vet, when my doggies just have to complain a little and we go right away... Of course, I don't have to wait hours and hours at the vet... I actually thought about getting my xray there...:D $50 and I'm in and out. How's that for two-tier!:D

Thanks for the tips everybody. :)

Prin, hope you feel better soon. A cousin of mine broke his toe a while ago. He did go to the ER and they had him wear this sandal type of contraption for his toe to heal. I hurt my left ring finger in grade school. Bent it backwards playing basketball. Hurt like crazy and it swelled a lot. I couldn't bend it for weeks, looked kind of funny when I took the subway and had to hold on to the bars with my left hand if my right hand was occupied! It too turned a purplish blue colour.

Just remember that if your toe is broken, it will take several weeks to heal properly. Be careful with what you do as to not make it worse. You may want to get it checked out anyway by a doctor, not sure if the ER will do anything now, but a doctor will get you an appointment for an x-ray.

Yeah, it's just really hard to find a doctor... I have two specialists, but no GP... Maybe my gyno can swab it...:D

Put ice on it, but never for longer than 20min...

If you've already gone past the 20min mark, then amputate it.

HTH

-Glen :D

um...ignore the amputate part, but I'm telling the truth when I say don't put ice on it for more than 20min, because that's what my friend (physiotherapist) and the ER doc told me when I broke my ankle last summer

After 20 minutes, the blood vessels begin to dilate and there is a rush of blood to the area. (I know that much).

Who needs that little annoying pinky anyway:D
I broke my big toe and the doc did nothing, just taped it up,together with the next toe,so don't bother with the ER.
The purply colour is a good indication it's broken, but you'll live!!

OOOOOH, Prin, the end is near. :p I hope you have your estate all in order. Is your will written? Do you have an executor for your will?:p :p

Seriously, though, ice on and off 20 minutes, what everyone else says about taping it to the next toe is the only solution. It hurts like heck, but will eventually heal.

Poooor little Prin... :D

I've broken a toe or two.

A doc or emergency room can't do anything really ... other than splint it or tape it to another toe.

If it really hurts tape it to the toe beside it to support it and take Ibuprofen to lower the swelling and pain.

Thats really all you can do.

You're all a bunch of jokers, eh? :D

It's not the littlest piggy, but the second to littlest. But it's ok, because he didn't get any roast beef anyway. (he needs to lose some weight by the look of it)

I'll have to try the ice...

I actually broke that toe (the second piggie in) on my left foot about 2 years ago. Ice and ibuprofen is what got me through. Hurt like heck for a couple of weeks while it healed. I don't recommend a 7 hour drive the day after you break it, though. Poor little piggie-it's never *quite* looked the same. ;) Stupid footstool!

I have broken my pinky toes so many times they are both permantely enlarged now - and I manage to stub them a lot - I never went to the doctor though - just wore really big shoes cause it hurt like heck to get my foot into one.

My five year old broke his big toe a few months back - you could tell it was complete bend back at an angle - yewww - he got a needle in his toe and they rebroke it and set it again - doc said either way its gonna hurt like hell

the worst is stubbing your toe in the middle of the night when you get up to use the loo - and its always on the stupid metal bedframe  ouch!

sounds terminal for your little(big at the moment)but amputation will solve that....no big deal though , you still have 4 more........the worst part is no doggie play time or walks for 8 weeks:eek: .......lol

Well, I've had worse injuries, so I guess I'll survive... Lucky I'm such a tomboy and I wear shoes that are 1/2 a size too big for me anyway. It's just weird having something all swelled up and purpley and there's nothing I can do about it. I think the piggy is being a bit overdramatic though. I mean, I hit him HARD, but still... It's been three days. Get over it piggy!! :D No wonder evolution is weeding out the small useless ones. (I have to watch what I say or Karma might take my toe completely!)

Prin - - sorry to hear about your "owie"

I did the exact same thing many years ago. My foot was all purple and swollen and I couldn`t wear a shoe on it for a good week.:D

I`d tell you to go have a good stiff drink but since you don`t imbibe, I guess you`ll have to suffer it out. :D

oo I'll go have a hot chocolate! Thanks for the idea. I even have some whip to go on top! Wooo!!

The saddest part is that my foot modelling career has ended before it even began.:D

So sorry for your toe. That can really hurt.

As for your foot modeling career - maybe you can get a job modeling metal foot casts. You know the kind you bend around the toe. Or is that only for fingers. Oh well take care.

It's doing better... The bruising is almost gone, but the swelling isn't... and it still hurts.... But otherwise, it's better.:D

Well, it`s only been a week so you`ve probably got close to another one to go.:D :D

Yeah, meanwhile, I'm moving everything that my foot can possibly stub against... Can you imagine stubbing a broken toe? Geez, just writing it gave me a chill.
